TV-Series
Description
Guizhang Chen, son of Yokosuka Trading Company figure Yaowen Chen, practices his family's traditional martial art Yanqingquan. This multilingual international businessman speaks Japanese, English, Chinese, and Russian. He enjoys Sichuan-style cuisine, especially tantan-mian ramen and GanShaoMinXia prawns, alongside playing pool and dancing. He stands 175 cm tall with black hair and brown eyes, typically dressed in a dark gray pinstripe business suit, white dress shirt, and red tie.
Having known Joy since childhood due to their fathers' business dealings, Guizhang once rescued her from kidnappers single-handedly, leading to her lasting crush on him, which he largely fails to notice. When Ryo Hazuki contacts the Chen family seeking information on Lan Di, Yaowen Chen assigns Guizhang to act as Ryo's covert bodyguard. Guizhang tests Ryo's combat skills via a surprise attack, resulting in mutual respect. During their interactions, Guizhang reveals the existence of the Phoenix Mirror, a disclosure overheard by Chai. Despite his father's orders to remain uninvolved, Guizhang chooses to aid Ryo's quest for vengeance.
When the Mad Angels gang kidnaps Nozomi Harasaki and demands Ryo defeat Guizhang for her release, the two stage a fight. After an initial stalemate, they unite to battle the entire 70-member gang. Guizhang then single-handedly overpowers their leader, Terry Ryan. He subsequently plans to accompany Ryo to Hong Kong. As they prepare to depart, Chai ambushes them, attempting to drop a metal bar on Ryo. Guizhang pushes Ryo to safety but suffers a severe leg injury from the falling object. Forced to remain behind for recovery, he assures Ryo they will reunite once healed.
Guizhang later maintains contact with Ryo via phone calls during his journey. In one call, Guizhang asks Ryo about his impression of Grandmaster Lishao Tao. If Ryo describes her as beautiful, Guizhang expresses surprise at learning the grandmaster is a woman, indicating he had never met her personally, and considers visiting her. He also appears as a minor character, such as a capsule toy obtainable in Shenmue III.
In the anime adaptation, Guizhang appears in episodes 3 to 5. After Ryo locates Master Chen at Warehouse #8, Guizhang and his father reveal details about Lan Di and the mirrors. Master Chen instructs Guizhang to maintain formality in their business relationship, specifically not to address him as "father" professionally, visibly upsetting Guizhang. Later, under Yaowen Chen’s orders, Guizhang ambushes Ryo to evaluate his combat skills and informs him of his protector role. When Chai steals the Phoenix Mirror, Guizhang joins Ryo and Master Chen in retrieving it. His internal conflict surfaces when questioning his father about continuing to tail Ryo, only to be reminded their involvement must remain limited to avoid escalating tensions.
