Description
Prince Genji, originally named Hikaru Genji, emerges as the scion of an emperor and Lady Kiritsubo, a low-ranking concubine. His mother’s early demise, hastened by court rivals exploiting her fragile political standing, casts a shadow over his youth. Though cherished by his father, Genji is stripped of royal standing, renamed Minamoto, and barred from succession to quell court tensions.

Renowned for striking beauty and refined artistry, he epitomizes Heian-era elegance through mastery of poetry, music, dance, and painting. His magnetic allure and poetic sensibilities captivate contemporaries, yet reckless romantic entanglements expose a penchant to flout social conventions, indifferent to the turmoil his passions provoke. Among his pursuits is Fujitsubo, his father’s consort and a mirror of his lost mother. Their clandestine affair yields a son, Reizei, who ascends as imperial heir while Genji’s fatherhood stays veiled.

His unions oscillate between calculated alliances and fervent longing. A politically arranged marriage to Lady Aoi, the Minister of the Left’s daughter, remains coldly formal until her fatal childbirth. Later, he seizes Murasaki, Fujitsubo’s young niece, molding her into his envisioned companion through years of tutelage and eventual matrimony—a bond steeped in manipulation, revealing his willingness to transgress moral limits for personal ideals.

Banished to Suma by Lady Kokiden’s schemes, Genji’s exile fosters introspection. Upon returning to court, his influence swells, earning him quasi-imperial honors. Yet his twilight years unravel amid rising adversaries and accumulating sorrows. Murasaki’s death and Third Princess’s betrayal plunge him into contemplation of life’s fleeting nature.

From impetuous noble to brooding patriarch, Genji’s trajectory weaves amorous exploits with shrewd ambition. His legacy lingers in figures like Kaoru, whose ambiguous lineage echoes Genji’s concealed paternity, mirroring themes of hidden identity and the rigid hierarchies that shape destinies.
