Description
Feitan is a member of the Phantom Troupe, an infamous and highly dangerous band of thieves. As one of the founding members, his origins trace back to Meteor City, a junkyard settlement whose citizens are considered non-existent by the outside world. Within the Troupe, he holds the number 2 and is recognized as having the fifth-greatest physical strength among the group. He serves as the primary interrogator for the organization, with a noted proficiency and preference for torture.

Feitan is a person of few words, often speaking with broken grammar, which suggests he is not speaking in his native language. When angered, particularly during intense combat, he has been known to switch to what appears to be his first language, shown as Chinese characters. He has a short temper and can become easily irritated, but he is not typically prone to loud outbursts. When he does lose his temper completely, he releases that anger in a devastating, unrestrained form. He holds a very specific philosophy regarding the Phantom Troupe: while he is loyal to the leader, Chrollo Lucilfer, he prioritizes the survival of the Spider as a whole over any individual member, including Chrollo himself. He is pragmatic and ruthless, willing to kill anyone who poses an obstacle without a moment of hesitation, and he shows no empathy for his victims. In the past, he had shown a much kinder disposition, caring for his friends in Meteor City, but the traumatic death of a close companion led him to embrace a life of darkness and revenge.

His primary motivation, like the rest of the Troupe, is to carry out his role within the Spider. During the Greed Island arc, the main goal of the Phantom Troupe is to find an exorcist who can remove the Judgment Chain placed on their leader's heart by Kurapika. Feitan participates in this effort by stealing a copy of the Greed Island video game. He enters the game along with his partner, Phinks, not necessarily to beat the game for its own sake, but to explore its world and eliminate players in order to find leads on a Nen exorcist. The mission itself provides a simple motivation for mayhem, and he and Phinks turn their search into a contest to see who can kill more players, displaying a casual and competitive enjoyment of carnage.

In the Greed Island storyline, Feitan has a significant if brief role. He and Phinks first appear attending an auction where a copy of the game is being sold, dressed in suits. They later ambush a car carrying the game, killing the occupants and stealing it. Once inside Greed Island, they operate as a deadly rogue element for other players. Their power is so immense that even Genthru, the primary human antagonist of the arc, recognizes them as an extreme threat and actively avoids confrontation with them. Feitan later joins other Troupe members who enter the game and takes part in the effort to locate the game's real-world physical location. After discovering the island, he and the others are confronted by the game master Razor, who finds Feitan to be an impressive individual. The Troupe ultimately leaves the game and arranges a meeting with the exorcist Abengane to save their leader.

Feitan is most frequently seen alongside Phinks, who is his regular partner and fellow original Troupe member from Meteor City. They work well together, seemingly attuned to each other's wavelength, and maintain a friendly rivalry, including competing over kill counts. He also shows a degree of trust and friendship with Shalnark, as he values Shalnark's judgment and is seen celebrating with him. Feitan has a tense but loyal relationship with Chrollo, believing the leader is too lenient at times but ultimately following his orders.

Feitan does not undergo significant personal development during the Greed Island arc, as his role is that of a powerful, antagonistic force. However, his later fight against the Chimera Ant Zazan in Meteor City provides a deeper look at his abilities. In that fight, after becoming enraged and injured, he unleashes his full power and temporarily becomes the de facto leader of the Phantom Troupe in Chrollo's absence.

Feitan's most notable ability is his incredible speed, which allows him to move so fast that he leaves afterimages of himself. He is highly skilled in swordsmanship, typically using a concealed sword hidden within an umbrella that can also function as a needle gun. As a Nen user, his Nen type is Transmutation. His unique ability is called Pain Packer. Once Feitan has taken sufficient damage, Pain Packer activates and materializes a protective suit of armor around his body. He then converts all the pain and anger from his injuries into energy, which manifests as a miniature sun known as Rising Sun. This attack emits scorching heat over a very large radius, burning everything in the vicinity to ashes. He is the only one protected from this heat by his conjured armor, meaning he does not care if his allies are caught in the blast. The more severe his injuries, the more powerful and devastating the resulting Rising Sun becomes.
