Description
Miime, also known as Mime, is an alien woman who serves as the last surviving member of her species from the planet Jura. She was rescued by Captain Harlock and his crew, and out of deep gratitude she pledged her life to him, becoming his closest companion and confidante aboard the starship Arcadia. Her background is marked by the destruction of her homeworld and her status as the sole remnant of her race, which gives her a permanent sense of solitude and mystery. In some adaptations, such as the Harlock Saga OVA, her origin is refashioned to depict her as a member of the Nibelung clan who defected after witnessing her brother Alberich’s actions, though later works like the Endless Odyssey OVA restore her original Juran history.
Her personality is quiet, sensitive, and brooding, with a profoundly empathic nature that allows her to sense and soothe the emotions of those around her. She rarely speaks, but her presence is calming and her actions are marked by a deep, unspoken dedication to Harlock and the Arcadia crew. She does not hold an official position on the ship, yet she regularly assists Doctor Zero in tending to injured crew members and serves as an informal counselor, as seen when she consoles Miss Masu after the loss of her fiancé. Her primary motivation is the protection and support of Captain Harlock, whom she serves without question, and she is willing to put herself in harm’s way to ensure his safety.
Miime possesses notable psychic and psionic powers, which she uses to reduce physical pain and to empathize with others in distress. She is also an accomplished musician, playing the lap harp with a skill that can ease the anxiety and pain of everyone aboard the Arcadia. Her physiology is distinctly alien; she has blue skin, long blue hair that reaches the length of her body, and almond-shaped yellow eyes, but no visible mouth. Despite this, she can communicate and absorb liquids through the general mouth area. She consumes alcohol as a non-intoxicating foodstuff, though extremely high-proof alcohol can induce intoxication. In the Harlock Saga OVA, she is given a more human appearance, plays a pipe organ, and gains the ability to control time, while the 2013 film depicts her with a more distinctly alien face that includes a mouth.
Throughout the original 1978 television series, she remains a constant, enigmatic presence at Harlock’s side, providing emotional ballast and supernatural aid during battles against the Mazone and other threats. Her lack of an official role underscores her status as a figure driven by personal loyalty rather than duty. In later retellings, her backstory and appearance shift while retaining the core traits of psychic power, musical talent, and unwavering devotion to Harlock. Her role in the story is consistently that of the quiet heart of the Arcadia, bridging the human and alien elements of the crew and acting as a spiritual anchor for Harlock himself.
