Description
Reiji Azuma, an ordinary Japanese tourist in Los Angeles, witnessed an assassination by Inferno's top killer, Phantom. His instinctive evasion during the ensuing pursuit impressed Inferno's leader, Scythe Master. Captured, Reiji endured memory erasure via drugs and hypnotherapy. Offered the codename Zwei, he chose assassin training over execution.
Under the tutelage of Ein, the very assassin who had chased him, Zwei rapidly honed his innate talents. His first mission eliminated Navy SEAL Lieutenant Wallace. Subsequent targets included mafia boss Don Muchio and the strategic killing of Tony Stone's family to destabilize him, all alongside Ein.
Inferno executive Claudia McCunnen shattered Zwei's fabricated reality by presenting his pre-capture passport, revealing his true identity as Reiji Azuma. Forced to choose, he reclaimed his name but remained entangled with Inferno as Claudia's Phantom.
Reiji intervened when Ein was severely injured on a mission, discovering Scythe Master had betrayed Inferno and framed her. Aligning with Ein against the organization, they fled. Reiji vowed to protect her, granting her the new identity Eren.
Their refuge was brief. Inferno captured Reiji, accusing him of aiding Scythe Master's rebellion. Claudia offered freedom in exchange for eliminating Scythe Master. Accepting required Reiji to temporarily resurrect his lethal Zwei persona and skills, triggering intense psychological instability.
The final clash occurred at a San Francisco wharf, Scythe Master guarded by militia. Operating with scarce ammunition, Reiji confronted the traitor only to find Eren under his renewed control. Tapping into Zwei's full capabilities – heightened perception and "phantom shifting" – pushed Reiji into a berserk state. As he fired at Scythe Master, Eren intercepted the bullet. Stunned, Reiji was then shot by Scythe Master and fell into the ocean. His final thoughts recalled his promise to give Eren a normal life and a genuine smile. His body washed ashore lifeless. Three months later, Inferno posthumously designated him their new Phantom.
Reiji possessed brown hair and brown eyes that shifted to green with orange centers when exhibiting killing intent. His attire evolved from casual wear (black button-up, white pants) during capture to formal suits (black with pink shirt, later grey with white shirt and red tie) as Zwei.
He mastered firearms, achieving accuracy under duress, and possessed advanced hand-to-hand combat skills, notably defeating Ein. Knife proficiency complemented his defining trait: exceptional survival instinct, crucial throughout his missions and escapes. His journey encompassed identity erasure, transformation into a syndicate asset, a fractured grasp at humanity protecting Eren, and ultimate demise within the world he was forced into.
