Description
Gairyū serves as a Decepticon within the Victory continuity, operating as part of the Dinoforce. His transformation yields a spiked quadrupedal monster form. He employs a semi-autonomous cyborg Ankylosaurus Pretender shell, enhancing his combat with the "Gai-Ankylo Dash" maneuver that propels him as a heavily armored, spiked projectile. His combat strategy focuses on defensive counterattacks; his back-wings absorb ambient energy to significantly amplify his considerable strength for powerful retaliatory strikes. This approach fosters excessive caution, delaying his attacks until perceived perfect moments, leading to missed opportunities and ineffective actions that frustrate teammates. More cynical observers interpret this behavior as cowardice.
In the Victory cartoon, Gairyū participates in numerous Decepticon operations under Emperor Deathsaurus, including the initial assault on Earth's moonbase and subsequent energy raids on Earth. He frequently combines with Dinoforce members to form the combiner Dinoking during battles against Autobots like Star Saber or Landcross, efforts typically thwarted. During the Autobot infiltration of the Decepticon Space Stronghold, Gairyū and the Dinoforce initially scatter but later stand down upon learning the Decepticons' energy-gathering motives support their families, including the Dinobabies.
The Victory comic shows Gairyū in a minor role, standing guard during teammate Kakuryu's fitness routine. In another Earth engagement, the Dinoforce forms Dinoking but is swiftly defeated by Landcross.
Within the 2005 IDW continuity, Gairyū appears among Deathsaurus's contingent on the Warworld. He aligns with Tarn and the Decepticon Justice Division alongside Deathsaurus to pursue the Decepticon cause and eliminate Megatron.
Gairyū's original 1989 toy is a redeco of Pretender Monster Bristleback, transforming into a monster robot and featuring a rubbery Ankylosaurus shell. He forms the left arm of the Dinoking combiner. Shell components commonly develop an oily residue and suffer metallic paint degradation; silver paint becomes uneven, and gold paint develops a green patina. A 2024 Legacy toy release reimagines Gairyū as a Core Class figure, featuring a new robotic Ankylosaurus mode based on his anime colors and a newly molded tail detaching into a blaster cannon. This version retains his role as Dinoking's left arm.
His name translates to "Armored Dinosaur," referencing the Ankylosauria suborder. While his toy included a rifle ("Ankylo Gun"), his animated counterpart wielded a scimitar capable of firing energy beams. Color discrepancies exist between his animation model (black limbs, white thighs) and the original toy (green thighs).
