OVA
Description
Ultra Magnus debuted in the Japanese-exclusive OVA "Scramble City," overseeing Metroplex's construction deep within an Autobot facility. He commanded the Autobot defense after Decepticons, alerted by Ratbat's espionage, attacked the site. Magnus strategically deployed combiner teams like the Aerialbots against Devastator and later mobilized the completed Metroplex to defeat the Decepticon combiners Menasor and Bruticus.

Within broader Generation 1 animated continuity, Ultra Magnus commanded Autobot City on Earth. During its defense against a Decepticon assault in 2005, a fatally wounded Optimus Prime passed him the Matrix of Leadership despite his reluctance to assume command. Forced into leadership, he organized an Autobot retreat to Cybertron, pursued by Galvatron. After their shuttle crashed on the Planet of Junk, Galvatron disassembled him and seized the Matrix. Repaired by the Junkions, he fought against Unicron, where Hot Rod claimed the Matrix to become Rodimus Prime. Ultra Magnus then relinquished leadership, becoming Rodimus' trusted advisor and second-in-command.

His later missions involved abduction by Quintessons for behavioral experiments alongside Cyclonus, where they developed mutual respect during their escape from a negative universe. He rescued Wheelie and Daniel Witwicky from Cyclonus after they sought his creation date for a birthday. He confronted Galvatron multiple times, drawing particular animosity as Galvatron's original target. An early victim of the Hate Plague, he turned violently against Rodimus Prime until cured by Optimus Prime's resurrection. In 2007, he defended Cybertron during the Plasma Energy Chamber conflict, sustaining critical damage before order was restored.

Japanese-exclusive continuations depicted earlier events where he arrived on Earth before 2005 to develop the Autobot Road and Scramble City technology, delivering Optimus Prime an upgraded trailer with the "Scramble Power Buster" cannon. In "Transformers: The Headmasters," he commanded Autobot City during renewed Decepticon attacks in 2011. His longstanding rivalry with Sixshot culminated in a duel where Sixshot killed him using a seventh transformation mode. With final words urging Earth's protection, he was buried there at Metroplex's request. His body notably retained color after death, attributed to either his armored physiology or animation inconsistency.

His alternate mode was a white Freightliner car carrier. His toy featured a smaller robot resembling Optimus Prime that combined with the trailer to form a larger armored robot, though most fiction depicted only the combined form. The trailer could reconfigure into a base mode when inverted, with the chest plate forming a projectile launcher.
