Description
Aarão is the older brother of Moses, born to Amram and Jochebed while the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt. Remaining with the Israelite community in the Nile Delta while Moses grew up in the Egyptian court, Aarão later serves as Moses' spokesman and primary support during confrontations with Pharaoh. He relays divine messages and assists in enacting the initial plagues using his staff.

Divine mandate appoints Aarão as the first High Priest of Israel, granting the priesthood to him and his male descendants. In this role, he performs sacred rituals, distinguishes between holy and common, clean and unclean, and teaches divine laws. Divine fire consumes the altar during his consecration sacrifices, publicly affirming his priestly authority. His leadership is challenged when the Israelites construct a golden calf in episode 16, "Israel's Treachery"; pressured into facilitating the idol's creation, he later faces consequences with the community.

Aarão experiences personal tragedy when divine fire consumes his elder sons, Nadab and Abihu, for offering unauthorized incense. Despite this loss, he continues his priestly duties without public dissent. Later, he joins Miriam in questioning Moses' exclusive prophetic authority, resulting in Miriam's affliction with a temporary skin disease. Aarão appeals to Moses for her healing, showing familial loyalty and deference to his brother's position.

During wilderness wanderings, Korah, a Levite, directly challenges Aarão's priestly authority. Divine judgment confirms Aarão's position through the miraculous budding of his staff, reinforcing his divinely ordained role. This staff is placed before the Ark of the Covenant as a permanent symbol of his priestly legitimacy.

Aarão dies before the Israelites enter Canaan, a consequence of his actions at Meribah where Moses struck a rock for water instead of speaking to it. Moses transfers the priestly garments to Aarão's son Eleazar on Mount Hor at his death. The Israelites mourn him for thirty days. His legacy continues through the Aaronic priesthood, with descendants including the prophet John the Baptist according to New Testament accounts.
