Orlando Drummond
Description
Orlando Drummond was a highly influential Brazilian voice actor, born on October 18, 1919, in Rio de Janeiro. He began his career in entertainment in the early 1940s, initially working as a foley artist before transitioning into acting and, most prominently, dubbing. Over a career that spanned nearly eight decades, he became one of the most recognized and beloved voices in Brazilian popular culture. Drummond passed away on July 27, 2021, at the age of 101.
While Drummond was renowned for voicing iconic Western characters such as Scooby-Doo, Popeye, and ALF for generations of Brazilian viewers, his work also extensively covered anime series dubbed for the Brazilian market. He contributed to many of the animated Japanese series that aired on Brazilian television, particularly from the 1960s through the 1990s.
Among his notable roles in anime was Dr. Kawashimo in the series Jetter Mars, a role confirmed by multiple sources. He was also the voice of Professor Pop in the series Prince Planet. In the anime adaptation of Pinocchio, Kashi no Ki Mokku, Drummond provided the first dub voice for Gepeto, the puppet-maker and father figure to the titular character. His work also included the role of Marshal Dogus in the anime Groizer X. Later, he voiced the character Gennai in the Brazilian dubs of the popular franchise Digimon, for both Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02.
Due to the nature of dubbing work, Drummond frequently collaborated with the same Rio de Janeiro-based studios, such as Herbert Richers, and worked alongside a consistent group of fellow voice actors over many decades. His career was marked by an extraordinary output and longevity. He held the Guinness World Record for voicing a single cartoon character, Scooby-Doo, for over 35 consecutive years. His contribution to Brazilian entertainment was such that he was the subject of a biography, Orlando Drummond, Brazilian Version, published in 2020.
