Description
Capitão Kidd is a prominent character from the animated series The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers. He is a member of an alien, bird-like species known as the Plitsky, also referred to as Paraboids, and serves as the captain of a starship called the Iron Falcon. His appearance is designed to resemble a large, garish bird, and his personality is a memorable blend of bluster and cunning, drawing comparisons to characters like Foghorn Leghorn and Long John Silver for his bombastic demeanor and self-serving nature.
In terms of background, Kidd is introduced as a space pirate who initially acts as an antagonist. He is directly responsible for a pivotal event in the series when he captures the ship transporting the Foxx family to the planet Kirwin. This action leads to the critical injury of Ranger Captain Zachary Foxx, resulting in Foxx requiring extensive bionic replacements, and sets the stage for the kidnapping of his wife, Eliza Foxx, by the Queen of the Crown. Kidd had planned to turn the Foxx family over to the Queen, but this alliance sours when the Queen refuses to let him claim the ship as a prize and dismisses him from the situation. Feeling betrayed and annoyed, Kidd turns against her, an act that immediately makes him a wanted figure by the Crown's forces.
His motivations are consistently selfish and opportunistic. Kidd is a survivor who is entirely self-serving, cruising through interstellar space in search of wealth, power, and an advantageous position for himself. He has no loyalty to any faction, be it the human Rangers or the oppressive Crown, and will ally with whichever side offers him the most benefit. Following his fallout with the Queen, he cuts a deal with the Galaxy Rangers, exchanging his aid for continued freedom and a trade alliance. Despite this, he remains an untrustworthy figure who continues to operate in the gray areas of the galaxy, engaging in various schemes and deals that serve only his own interests, such as selling counterfeit starstones to the Crown.
Kidd's role in the story evolves from a primary antagonist to that of a chaotic, often burdensome, neutral party. Although he begins as a menacing figure responsible for great harm to the Foxx family, he becomes an occasional and unreliable ally to the Rangers. This shift proves crucial in the larger conflict with the Crown. For instance, when a fleet powered by fake starstones he sold threatens to destroy Earth, Kidd provides the Rangers with the critical information on how to easily destroy the brittle counterfeits, making him indirectly responsible for the destruction of a significant portion of the Crown's fleet.
His key relationships are defined by his fickle alliances. His relationship with Zachary Foxx is fraught with tension, as Kidd is the reason for Foxx's bionic implants and the trauma his family endured. However, their dynamic is forced to accommodate grudging cooperation when their goals align against a common enemy. Kidd also briefly helps the alien race known as BETA make first contact with the xenophobic Traash, demonstrating that his services are for hire to a wide variety of clients, regardless of their species or intentions. As a character, Kidd does not undergo a fundamental moral reformation. His development is more about the revelation of his true nature as a rogue and profiteer. The series creator has noted that while Kidd was originally intended to be a much more threatening figure, he ultimately evolved into a character more akin to a troublesome rogue, effectively becoming a source of comic relief and unpredictable interference who is never entirely a villain nor a hero.
In terms of notable abilities, Kidd possesses traits typical of his avian species. He is known for a powerful scream or whistle, which can be used as a weapon or a form of communication. As the captain of the Iron Falcon, he commands a motley crew of bizarre space aliens and is a capable, if bumbling, spacefarer. His primary survival skill is his cunning and his ability to navigate the political and criminal underworlds of the galaxy to strike deals that favor him, no matter the danger or the moral implications.
