Description
Tokuichi Yamagami served as a Major in the Military Police of the Imperial Japanese Army before his transformation into a vampire. His pre-vampire career included an assignment at the Imperial Embassy in the United Kingdom, reflecting his elite military academy background. He took pride in this status, informing his initially arrogant and bureaucratic personality. During a mission escorting a vampire infected with the V-virus, he and his comrade Shutaro Kurusu were turned into vampires. As the source vampire was unranked, Yamagami and Kurusu also became unranked, marking a fall from his former elite standing.

As an unranked vampire, Yamagami possessed below-average physical capabilities like muscle strength and instantaneous power compared to higher-ranked vampires. He had an unknown special ability and a stigmata on his wrist. Assigned to the anti-vampire unit Code Zero under the Imperial Japanese Army to manage vampire threats in 1923 Tokyo, his lack of rank often made him the subject of jokes or dismissive treatment. Despite this, his experience and strategic mindset earned him respect as a mentor figure among younger colleagues.

Yamagami's human marriage to Tomiko Yamagami defined his personal life; he remained devoted to her. His vampirism prevented reunion, fueling resentment toward his condition and a desire for normalcy, often manifesting as irritability within Code Zero. He once visited Tomiko disguised as a ghost through Kurusu's assistance, urging her to move on, underscoring his enduring care yet irreversible separation.

His relationship with Code Zero commander Yoshinobu Maeda was complex; both graduated from the same military academy class, but Maeda's higher rank and Yamagami's vampire status created friction, leading to sharp remarks. Underlying mutual respect persisted due to shared history and duty. Yamagami also acted protectively toward Kurusu, reflecting his mentor role despite their differing vampire ranks.

Yamagami's story concluded during the Great Kanto Earthquake. To rescue the trapped Maeda, he exposed himself to fatal direct sunlight. This sacrifice ensured Maeda's survival but resulted in Yamagami's disintegration, emphasizing his loyalty to comrades and rejection of his vampiric existence, consistent with his longing for human normalcy.
