Wheelie began as a young Autobot stranded alone on the hostile planet Quintessa after a crash. This isolation forged his significant survival skills and resourcefulness, establishing a resilient and adaptable nature within Generation 1. This characterization continued into *Transformers: The Headmasters*.
In *The Headmasters*, Wheelie serves as the primary robotic companion to the human Daniel Witwicky. Their dynamic reflects their frequent collaboration and youthful mischief from the Generation 1 cartoon's third season. Unlike his Western depiction, Wheelie does not speak in rhymes in the Japanese continuity, though his personality retains a childlike exuberance. He transforms into a small Cybertronian car, matching his diminutive stature relative to other Autobots.
Throughout the series, Wheelie participates in critical events. He assists Autobot operations defending Cybertron against Decepticon attacks and joins missions to thwart Scorponok's schemes. He is present during the conflict involving Vector Sigma's destabilization and Optimus Prime's sacrifice. Later, he aids in evacuating Cybertron after its destruction and supports the leadership transition to Fortress Maximus. His combat abilities appear inconsistent; he lands blows on formidable foes like the Predacons combiner team and the city-sized Trypticon, feats contrasting with his small size and limited firepower, often viewed as narrative contrivances.
Wheelie's characterization includes comic relief and immature moments. During a celebration for Fortress Maximus, he accidentally consumes energon wine and collapses intoxicated. In the manga adaptation, he peeks under the skirt of a holographic character. His interactions with other Autobots, particularly Headmaster Chromedome, involve frequent backtalk and defiance, though he faces minimal reprimand.
His combat role is limited by size and lack of advanced weaponry, often relegating him to support tasks or missions alongside Daniel. Despite this, he remains a persistent presence in the Autobot ranks, participating in battles and strategic efforts until the series' conclusion, which sees the Autobots departing Earth.
