Description
Kou Uraki, a 19-year-old Earth Federation test pilot stationed at Torrington Base during UC 0083, graduated from the Nijmegen Military Academy. He possessed extensive mobile suit knowledge gained through personal study, yet lacked real combat experience before Operation Stardust. His initial role involved testing captured Zeon units like the MS-06F-2 Zaku II F2 Type, where his technical aptitude emerged alongside criticism of the Zaku's limitations.

Uraki blended technical passion with impulsiveness. His intense curiosity drove him to sneak aboard the carrier Albion to see the prototype RX-78GP01 Gundam "Zephyranthes" and RX-78GP02A Gundam "Physalis". This enthusiasm clashed with his hot-tempered, reckless nature, evident when he defied orders to pursue the stolen GP02A in the GP01 without authorization. Despite inexperience, he demonstrated fierce loyalty to comrades and a drive to protect others, intensified after witnessing his mentor Lieutenant South Burning's death. He harbored a persistent rivalry with Zeon ace Anavel Gato, whose superior skills initially overwhelmed him but fueled his determination. A noted quirk was his strong dislike of carrots, often omitted from his cafeteria meals.

His combat trajectory evolved significantly. Failing to stop Gato's theft of the GP02A, Uraki was formally appointed GP01 pilot aboard the Albion. Early mistakes, such as deploying the unmodified GP01 in space against Cima Garahau's fleet, resulted in near-destruction, necessitating upgrades to the Full Burnern configuration. Through repeated battles against foes like the MA-06 Val Walo and Cima's forces, he matured into a capable pilot, earning promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade for defending Admiral Green Wyatt. His key confrontations included dueling Gato during the naval review—destroying both units—and later piloting the stolen GP03 "Dendrobium" to prevent a colony drop. Despite this development, interference from Nina Purpleton, who revealed her past relationship with Gato, contributed to his failure to stop Operation Stardust.

Relationships shaped his arc. He formed a complex romantic bond with Nina Purpleton, the Anaheim Electronics engineer overseeing the Gundam prototypes; their interactions shifted from initial friction to mutual attraction, though Uraki's inexperience with women and combat focus caused tension. Fellow test pilot Chuck Keith provided camaraderie, while Lieutenant Burning served as a guiding figure whose death profoundly impacted him. After Operation Stardust, Uraki faced a military tribunal for insubordination and GP03 theft, receiving one year of hard labor. The Federation later expunged his record to conceal the Gundam Development Project, reinstating his rank. He reunited with Keith, Nina, and mechanic Mora Bascht at North America's Oakley Base.

Uraki's legacy includes the unofficial title "Phantom Ace" for his combat kills during the Delaz Conflict, erased from Federation records. Unlike many Albion crew members, he never joined the Titans. His piloting skills—honed without Newtype abilities—and role in the suppressed Operation Stardust incident remain pivotal.
