Description
Relena Darlian, born Relena Peacecraft, is the sole surviving female heir to the Sanc Kingdom throne. Born April 7, After Colony 180 to King and Queen Peacecraft, her infancy ended in tragedy when the United Earth Sphere Alliance invaded Sanc Kingdom, slaughtering the royal family. Rescued as a baby, she was adopted by loyal politician Vice-Minister Darlian, who raised her unaware of her heritage.
Initially a privileged schoolgirl, her life transforms upon discovering the injured Gundam pilot Heero Yuy on a beach. This encounter draws her into the Earth-space colonies conflict. After her adoptive father is assassinated by OZ's Lady Une, he reveals her true identity as a Peacecraft princess on his deathbed. This revelation compels her to embrace her family's pacifist legacy and reclaim her role as sovereign of the restored Sanc Kingdom.
As Princess, she actively promotes disarmament and peaceful solutions, teaching pacifism to children and negotiating with factions like the Romefeller Foundation. Despite her commitment to nonviolence, she demonstrates resilience and tactical skill, notably attempting to assassinate Lady Une with a pistol in vengeful rage, though she missed. Her political influence grows significantly. Romefeller installs her as the puppet "Queen of the World Nation" after her surrender prevents her kingdom's destruction. She subverts their plans, persuading Romefeller members to adopt her pacifist ideals, undermining their militaristic agenda.
In *Endless Waltz* (After Colony 196), she serves as Vice Foreign Minister of the Earth Sphere Unified Nation (ESUN). Her dedication to peace remains central, though she acknowledges, as stated in the OVA, that pacifism requires active defense and occasional conflict. During a diplomatic mission to Colony X-18999, the Mariemaia Army—led by Treize Khushrenada's daughter and manipulated by Dekim Barton—kidnaps her. During captivity, she deduces Mariemaia's intent to exploit her political influence and attempts to dissuade the child from violence. Her captivity triggers Gundam pilot intervention against Dekim's revived "Operation Meteor."
Key relationships shape her development. Her complex bond with Heero Yuy involves his repeated vows to protect her despite initial threats on her life; their contrasting ideologies—her pacifism versus his soldier mentality—create ongoing tension. She also shares a significant connection with her brother, Milliardo Peacecraft (later Zechs Merquise), whom she confronts multiple times to dissuade him from vengeance. In the *Frozen Teardrop* photo novel, their relationship culminates in marriage.
Her skills include diplomacy honed through a high-society upbringing, deductive reasoning demonstrated during her kidnapping, and leadership under pressure. She commands personal military forces when necessary but consistently prioritizes dialogue over combat. By the series' conclusion, she solidifies her role as a symbol of sustained peace, advocating for Earth-colony coexistence while acknowledging the need for vigilance.
