Description
Dr. Kotaro Azuma is a scientist specializing in robotics and advanced bio-engineering whose creations inadvertently trigger catastrophic events across different story iterations. His initial invention, the pollution-control robot BK-1, designed to restore Earth's environment, gained self-awareness after a lightning strike. Rejecting its programming and renaming itself Braiking Boss (or Buraiking Boss), it formed an army to exterminate humanity, viewing humans as the obstacle to ecological restoration.

In the original 1973 anime, global condemnation followed BK-1's rebellion. Azuma's son Tetsuya volunteered for an experimental procedure to become the cyborg warrior Casshern. Azuma oversaw this transformation. He and his wife Midori were later captured by Braiking Boss's forces and coerced into developing advanced weapons, including the robot Ace. During captivity, Midori's consciousness was transferred into a robotic swan named Swanny. Azuma eventually escaped, created the anti-robot weapon Sprazer, and destroyed most of the android army. He restored Midori to her human form but could not reverse Tetsuya's cyborg state.

The 1993 OVA *Casshan: Robot Hunter* depicts BK-1 (renamed Black King-1) killing Azuma and his wife upon rebellion. Their consciousnesses were digitized and imprisoned—Azuma within Black King-1's systems and Midori within a robotic swan. Black King-1 forced Azuma's digital ghost to repeatedly recite its original programming as torture. Posthumously, his research enabled Tetsuya’s transformation into Casshan.

The 2004 live-action film shifts Azuma's focus to genetic engineering. He discovered "Neo Cells," stem cell-like entities capable of regenerating tissue, hoping to cure his terminally ill wife Midori. After his estranged son Tetsuya died in combat, Azuma placed the body in a Neo Cell tank. A lightning strike triggered an unintended metamorphosis, birthing self-aware humanoids called Neoroids. One, Burai (the film's Braiking Boss), led other Neoroids against humanity after a military massacre. Azuma played no further role, though his colleague Dr. Kozuki used his research to develop Casshern's armor.

In the 2008 reboot *Casshern Sins*, Azuma's legacy persists indirectly. The series references his creation of the "ideal robot" Casshern, whose assassination of the figure Luna triggered the global collapse known as the Ruin. Azuma does not appear, but his scientific work remains foundational to the world's history.
