Description
Kim Kinnison starts as a farm boy on the agricultural planet Mqueie, living with his father Gary Kinnison and dreaming of piloting starships. His routine shatters when a damaged spacecraft crashes nearby. Investigating, Kim finds a dying Lensman who transfers his Lens—an event deemed impossible—binding it to Kim’s arm and marking him as a new Lensman.

The Lens holds critical data on a DNA-based superweapon created by the Boskone Empire, turning Kim into a target. Boskone annihilates Mqueie to eliminate him. During the attack, Gary—exposed as a one-armed co-founder of the Galactic Patrol—sacrifices himself to secure Kim’s escape. Thrust into the Boskone conflict, Kim must deliver the Lens’s intelligence to the Patrol.

Fleeing aboard the starship *Britannia* with his horned, bearded Valerian friend Van Buskirk, Kim meets Galactic Patrol nurse Clarissa MacDougall, forming a bond. He also encounters Worsel, a dragon-like alien Lensman who mentors him. Worsel explains the Lens responds to emotions and enables telepathy with other Lensmen. Kim learns to harness its powers through instinct and guidance, though some abilities remain unique to him.

Kim evolves from an inexperienced youth to a decisive agent, displaying tactical ingenuity during missions—like freeing allies from Boskone captivity on Delgon and navigating the disco-themed planet Radelix. His resolve crystallizes confronting Boskone leader Lord Helmuth, whose immense physical and mental powers challenge Kim. Accessing the Lens’s full potential, Kim transmits the weapon’s weakness to the Galactic Patrol fleet, ensuring their victory over Boskone’s stronghold. The Lens’s role as Helmuth’s ultimate weakness finalizes Kim’s acceptance of his duty.

Throughout, Kim’s reliance on loyalty and teamwork is underscored by his ties to Van Buskirk, Clarissa, and Worsel. His connection with Clarissa deepens into mutual attraction, though his Lensman responsibilities remain foremost.
