Description
Captain Mike Hamilton commands the Syncam Corporation deep-space cruiser *Saldes* on a 23rd-century mission transporting surveyors to evaluate a distant planet for mining. Extensive time spent in cryogenic hibernation across multiple voyages means he has biologically aged only 240 years, far less than the actual elapsed time.
His prolonged absences caused profound personal loss. Returning from missions, he repeatedly found family and friends aged or deceased. He once met his own son as an elderly man, having last seen him as an infant. These experiences fostered deep alienation and displacement. Unable to adapt to the changing eras and societies he returned to, viewed as an outdated relic, he ultimately chose to remain in space to escape temporal dislocation.
Facing crises aboard the *Saldes*, including two impostors, mechanical failures, and a lethal alien organism that evolved from bacteria into a shapeshifting mimic, Hamilton leads pragmatically. He advises against confronting the impostors, recognizing the danger of conflict in confinement. He prioritizes immediate threats, collaborating with survivors to create flamethrowers against the creature.
His investigation uncovers the mission's true purpose: the ship's computer is compromised by "Lily C.A.T." (Computerized Animal-shaped Technological robot), a replica cat, revealing Syncam Corporation's plan to sacrifice the crew to study the alien organism.
In the final confrontation, Hamilton secures the escape of two survivors by revealing a hidden shuttle. He then executes a plan to destroy the ship and organism, releasing hydrogen gas and igniting it with a lighter. He perishes in the explosion, ensuring the survivors reach a nearby planet while the organism burns.
