The Mazinkaiser OVA continuity alters his appearance to a darker color scheme, adds fur-covered limbs, reduces his chest-face to a smaller and paler version, and replaces original purple markings with red war paint.

Personality-wise, Ligern displays greater ferocity than other Mycenae generals and harbors a pronounced desire for personal glory. He actively seeks to destroy Great Mazinger before rivals can claim the achievement and voices approval for the Great Marshall of Hell's leadership methods. This ambition drives him to defy superiors to secure credit for eliminations. The OVA iteration intensifies his aggression into a berserker mindset, showing blatant disregard for subordinate safety by allowing their deaths while he pursues targets.

In combat, Ligern employs dishonorable strategies including sneak attacks and overwhelming group assaults. He utilizes a signature ability to fire electromagnetic beams from his tusks. Within the original television series, he frequently engages Great Mazinger in unsuccessful battles. His final conflict occurs during the assault on the Science Fortress Laboratory, where he and General Angora attempt to block Mazinger Z's advance. Venus A and Mazinger Z strike him through the chest with a Koshiryoku Beam, causing his demise.
