Emperor Burai commands the Hyakki Empire as its supreme ruler and primary antagonist in Getter Robo G, later appearing across franchise installments. His imposing figure exhibits light brown skin, light purple hair, a beard, and prominent antler-like horns. He dons a red military uniform with white straps, yellow tasseled shoulder pads, black shoes, and a silver-edged black cape, while his eyes feature red pupils set against light green sclera.
A supplementary manga chapter reveals Burai began as a human scientist who unearthed an Andromeda Country UFO in the Arctic. An alien brain within fused with him, transforming him into an advanced Oni and granting immense power. This fusion warped his psyche, igniting a megalomaniacal drive to conquer Earth under absolute rule while deeming other life inferior. Post-transformation, he amassed followers using similar hybridization methods to build his army.
Burai directs all Hyakki Empire operations, delegating missions to lieutenants and generals. His horns act as radio antennae, enabling direct control over empire machines like Hyakki Beasts. He pilots skillfully, first commanding the UFO linked to his transformation and later the fortress robot Uzahra. Throughout Getter Robo G, he engineers schemes to crush the Getter Team, including exploiting the original Getter Robo’s theft to accelerate Japan’s conquest. His campaign ends when Uzahra is driven into space and obliterated by the Getter Team’s Shine Spark, killing him.
In Shin Getter Robo, a future spacefaring army retrieves Burai’s body from Uzahra’s wreckage, rebuilding him as a colossal cyborg designed to annihilate Getter Robo. This enhanced form battles both Getter Robo and Getter Robo G, deploying Hyakki Beasts from within its frame. When confronting Shin Getter Robo, Burai details his resurrection and purpose before being overpowered. Shin Getter Robo tears him from his cyborg throne and jettisons him into deep space.
After his final defeat, Burai’s spirit manifests alongside Emperor Gore within the Getter Rays. Here, his demeanor shifts toward understanding, acknowledging necessary risks to shield Earth from annihilation. He and Gore assist the Getter Team against the future army, recognizing Getter as Earth’s indispensable defense despite the perils of Getter Ray reliance.
