TV-Series
Description
Mari Sakurano is a central character introduced as a 15-year-old student and school idol at Rinkai Academy, renowned for her beauty, academic excellence, and friendly nature. She serves as the manager for the school's soccer team. Her adoptive father is prominent scientist Daizaburo Higashiyama, a connection detailed in supplementary materials. Mari shares a longstanding childhood friendship with protagonist Akira Hibiki, stemming from their fathers' bond.

Her personality blends kindness, curiosity, and empathy, often showing concern for others, especially Akira. This is balanced by a quick temper, particularly when provoked by Akira's teasing or perceived romantic rivals, leading to physical reactions like hitting him or Dan Araiso. Early on, Mari harbors a significant, unrequited crush on Akira, marked by visible jealousy. This manifests in her initial rivalry with Rei Asuka, whom she accuses of secretly dating Akira and treats cattily, reflecting her clingy and possessive tendencies at that stage.

Mari undergoes substantial development. Motivated to aid Akira against the Demon Empire, she co-founds the Copelander Corps and rises to become its leader. She drives her own car in support operations, similar to Akira's Sparker motorcycle. Her role evolves into active participation; she pilots the Bluegear mecha when needed and demonstrates courage in combat, including one critical instance where she attempts a heroic sacrifice piloting Bluegear to save Akira's life, only being rescued at the last moment. This signifies her growth into an action-oriented figure pushing her limits as a capable normal human.

Her relationship with Akira progresses from one-sided affection to mutual romance, solidifying a battle partnership where Mari consistently supports him from the sidelines and through direct action. Her jealousy towards Rei subsides; she recognizes her earlier pettiness, apologizes, and they become allies within the Copelander Corps. Mari also forms a meaningful connection with Princess Lemuria, Akira's mother, offering comfort and a pink shawl when Lemuria confides her maternal struggles.

Mari expresses fondness for Swedish culture, mentioning a desire to live there in a castle with Akira. She harbors a fear of snakes, which Akira exploits for pranks, provoking angry reactions. The character is sometimes depicted in scenes involving fanservice.

Expanded media, like *Raideen vs. Raiga: Men and Monsters*, depicts Mari and Akira's relationship progressing further; she becomes his wife. In this iteration, she possesses a notably attractive physique, long brown hair, and bluish-teal eyes, often wearing glasses. Her personality retains elements of curiosity and occasional sharpness. She appears in subsequent installments like *Gamera vs. the Dark General* and the *Kaiju World War* films within this expanded continuity.
