OVA
Description
Yattaran is the first mate of the space pirate ship Arcadia, serving directly under Captain Harlock. He presents a stout frame with a pot belly, glasses, and casual attire: a white t-shirt featuring a blue horizontal stripe, blue jeans, a dark blue skull-and-crossbones bandanna, black boots, and a brown belt with a yellow buckle. This design aligns with Leiji Matsumoto's aesthetic, specifically modeled after manga artist Kaoru Shintani.

Often seeming lazy or distracted, Yattaran spends significant leisure time meticulously building plastic model kits and crafting intricate ships in bottles. This dedication to his hobby frequently causes him to neglect basic needs like bathing or eating. However, his demeanor transforms during critical moments, revealing unwavering dedication, courage, and fearlessness in executing necessary actions. He reacts strongly to being called a pig, indicating personal pride beneath his generally easygoing exterior.

He possesses exceptional expertise in ship engineering and space combat. Yattaran is one of the most knowledgeable individuals regarding the Arcadia's structure and systems, second only to its creator, Tochiro Oyama. His responsibilities include the vessel's maintenance, repairs, and renovations. During combat, he is among the few trusted to pilot the Arcadia and effectively operate its weapon systems, demonstrating tactical proficiency.

Yattaran serves partially as comic relief within the crew, notably through frequent arguments with Doctor Zero over raiding the ship's kitchen for sake. Despite this role, his loyalty to Harlock and commitment to the Arcadia's mission are absolute. He consistently positions himself beside Harlock when confronting threats, affirming his status as a trusted senior officer.

Across iterations of the Captain Harlock saga—including the original manga, the 1978 anime series, and later OVAs like *The Endless Odyssey*—Yattaran's core characteristics remain consistent: technical mastery, passion for model-building, and steadfast loyalty. His background as a brilliant mathematician supports his technical capabilities. His fundamental role and personality show no significant alterations in spin-offs or sequels like *Harlock Saga* or *The Endless Odyssey*, indicating a stable portrayal throughout official media.
