TV-Series
Description
Shige Yamada, originally Shige Yamano, is the 70-year-old maternal grandmother of Nonoko and Noboru Yamada, and mother of Matsuko Yamada, living with the family. Her surname "Yamano" blends the Japanese words for "mountain" (山) and "field/wilderness" (野).

Highly energetic and strong-willed, Shige embodies a stubborn, snarky, and "hard-boiled" personality. Her sharp wit fuels frequent sarcastic remarks and pragmatic proverbs, exemplified by her quip during a celebrity drug scandal: "Even without drugs, I was getting high." Despite her crankiness, she offers blunt, perceptive advice during family conflicts, revealing insight into domestic dynamics.

Originally speaking in Kansai dialect, her speech later shifted to Okayama dialect. Shige interacts casually with surreal elements, coexisting with household supernatural creatures (yokai) as if ordinary, and references contemporary events like attending a *Princess Mononoke* screening.

After her mother-in-law's death, Shige permanently joined the Yamada household. Her backstory includes running a farm in her hometown before relocating. Once settled, she occasionally helps operate a bakery near the family home. Her concern during real crises was shown directly, as in consecutive strips addressing the Great Hanshin Earthquake, while later tragedies like the 2011 Tohoku earthquake were explored indirectly through fictional events examining loss.

Shige owns a sullen pet dog named Pochi, whose grumpy temperament mirrors her own. Her interactions highlight generational contrasts, frequently challenging traditional expectations and mocking societal norms, including openly critiquing household patriarchal structures.

In the animated adaptation *My Neighbors the Yamadas*, Shige's comically stern demeanor anchors vignettes of familial chaos, like forgotten chores or disputes over television control. Her underlying wisdom surfaces in reflective moments, such as contemplating the transient beauty of cherry blossoms.

Her portrayal remains consistent across official media, showing no significant evolution or backstory expansion beyond her established traits as a fixture of resilient, cantankerous familial love.
