Convinced her son was her father's reincarnation, Dusty's mother named him accordingly. Dusty initially defied expectations, aspiring to journalism like Patrick, until an emotional plea swayed him. He compromised by applying to both military and civilian academies but secured admission only to Heinessen's military institution. Before enrollment, Patrick gifted him a rusted key—a talisman said to have shielded his grandfather from a bullet.

At the Free Planets Alliance Officer Academy in 785 UC, Dusty forged an enduring friendship with Yang Wen-li. His early career saw him battle in the 5th Iserlohn Assault as a first lieutenant in 792 UC.
