Description
Yoko Tanaka is a 14-year-old girl from rural Japan who travels to Tokyo aspiring to become an idol singer, accompanied by her pet flying squirrel, Mu, often perched on her head or shoulder. On the train, she meets Saki Yamamori, another aspiring entertainer focused on acting; they form an immediate bond and resolve to pursue their dreams together.
Her distinctive appearance features bright pink hair styled in large heart-shaped pigtails that defy conventional physics, consistently paired with cheerful pink outfits reflecting her extremely optimistic personality. She possesses a wide-eyed, perpetually smiling demeanor and radiates enthusiasm. Despite initial naivete as a newcomer, she demonstrates unexpected academic intelligence and athletic talent.
Exhibiting natural singing talent without formal training, she is discovered in Shibuya by talent scout Toshio Harada of I STAR Productions. Adopting the stage name "Yokkyun," her career involves various challenges and opportunities, including becoming the face of a curry brand endorsement. Sampling curry flavors sparked a fascination with Indian culture that later influenced her fashion.
Her personality serves as a foil to Saki's pessimism. She consistently counters Saki's catchphrase about a "dark future" with unwavering positivity, encouraging others to challenge negative thoughts. This attitude profoundly impacts those around her, including I STAR Productions president Hideki Yamashita, renewing his optimism after initial doubt.
Throughout her Tokyo experiences, she participates in diverse activities, such as a Christmas episode expressing belief in Santa Claus and receiving environmental education about oxygen depletion concerns. She also engages with cultural and historical events, learning about World War II's impact on Japan through stories of the Great Tokyo Air Raid.
Her story includes a distant finale set fifty years in the future where former associates like Kyoko reminisce about her while watching her on television; her own fate in this future remains ambiguous as she does not physically appear.
