Description
Prince Mackaroo, originally Ojarumaru Sakanoue, is a mischievous 5-year-old prince from the Heian-era Fairy World's nobility. Bored by his sheltered existence and princely duties, he dramatically alters his fate by stealing the powerful scepter of Great King Enma, ruler of the Enma World. Fleeing Enma's pursuit, he accidentally plunges through the Moon Hole, landing in modern-day Japan's Moonlight Town.

He speaks in archaic polite language, calling himself "Maro" and others "Sochi," ending sentences with phrases like "de ojaru," "ka no," or "no ja." Surprise prompts an "Oja," while seeing his actively avoided fiancée, Princess Okame, elicits "Ojazozo." Small and round-faced with large eyes, he sports a topknot adorned with a golden bell. His attire is typically a red robe with yellow trim, and he always carries the stolen scepter enabling interdimensional travel.

Whimsical, laid-back, and somewhat self-centered, he possesses a strong aversion to exertion, water, and vegetables. He displays childlike curiosity about modern life, constantly asking questions to grasp new concepts. Despite mischievous tendencies, he shows kindness and generosity, especially towards friends. Pudding is his favorite food, provoking strong reactions if taken. He often relaxes on his traditional three-piece set: a pedestal, byōbu, and armrest.

In Moonlight Town, he lives with the Tamura family after befriending Kazuma Tamura, an 8-year-old boy who becomes his closest companion, often carrying him piggyback. His caretaker, Denbo, a firefly messenger from his family, later joins to provide supervision. His stay is complicated by the persistent Oni Child Trio—Aobei, Kisuke, and Akane—sent by Great King Enma to retrieve the scepter. Their schemes to capture him or the scepter consistently fail, often thwarted by his cleverness or accidental interventions.

He gradually forms bonds with other residents, including Kazuma’s classmates, a pair of impoverished komainu guardians, and a frequently job-changing freelancer. He periodically returns to the Heian era via the Moonlit Night Pond but continues living primarily in the modern world, navigating everyday adventures, encountering cultural novelties, and occasionally participating in folktale or popular story parodies.

His character development shows gradual integration into modern life while retaining core traits. Body swaps with characters like Enma or Ai Tamura offer temporary perspective shifts. Relationships deepen, especially his bond with Kazuma, evident in shared quiet moments and mutual protectiveness. Despite ongoing challenges—the Oni Trio’s pursuits and Princess Okame’s attempts to win his affection—he maintains his carefree demeanor and preference for leisure, embodying a perpetual childlike spirit adapting across eras.
