Description
Cambalhota (known as Hoppy in English adaptations and Kerota in the original Japanese version) is a frog character introduced when his parents, George and Gladys, abduct Maya to arrange her marriage to their son, believing her small size makes her suitable. Initially presented as an unwilling prospective groom for Maya, Cambalhota reveals a gentle and empathetic nature. Learning of Maya's urgent mission to wake her mother and return home, he releases her from the forced engagement of his own accord, prioritizing her freedom over his parents' demands and becoming her ally.

He transitions into a steadfast companion, actively joining Maya's quest to reach the Crystal Prince in the southern lands and providing consistent support through trials. His kindness extends to interactions with others, such as reassuring Maya about Noble the sugar fairy's resilience after Noble is swallowed by the antagonist Croven. Cambalhota's optimism and belief in his friends' capabilities offer emotional stability during hardships. His design includes wearing clothing.

During the original 26-episode narrative, Cambalhota faces peril when a snake lures him onto a sabotaged bridge, causing him to fall during its collapse. Presumed dead, he later reappears alive. Demonstrating enduring loyalty, he rejoins Maya's group after recovering. This incident highlights his vulnerability alongside his resilience and commitment to aiding Maya's mission.

Cambalhota's character arc contrasts with traditional fairy tale suitors. Unlike antagonists like Mr. Mora who pursue Maya maliciously, Cambalhota respects her rejection and evolves into a platonic friend. His actions consistently prioritize Maya's well-being and the collective goal of her quest, solidifying his role as a dependable supporting companion throughout the official series episodes.
