Akela initially leads the wolf pack when Mowgli is adopted. His physical appearance features a predominantly dark, bluish-grey coat, with lighter fur on his eyebrows and the thicker area across his upper body. As an elder, he possesses significant knowledge and wisdom, guiding the pack and mentoring the young Mowgli.

After Alexander, his initial successor, dies, Akela steps back from retirement to resume leadership during a time of instability. When Luri later becomes leader, Akela transitions into an advisory role, offering counsel and support drawn from his deep experience. He continues contributing to pack decisions and strategies as a consultant.

Akela also mediates conflicts within the pack, working to quell internal disagreements and preserve unity by resolving interpersonal tensions, especially during challenging periods.

Near the series' conclusion, Akela sustains severe injuries during a confrontation with hyenas and ultimately succumbs to these wounds.
