Walter Massey was a Canadian actor renowned for his extensive and prolific career as a voice artist in numerous animated series, particularly for English dubs of Japanese anime produced primarily in the 1980s and 1990s. He was born Walter Edward Hart Massey on August 19, 1928, in Toronto, Ontario, and passed away on August 4, 2014, in Montreal, Quebec. His career in the entertainment industry spanned more than five decades, beginning in the late 1950s.

Massey was based in Montreal and became a foundational figure in Canadian acting, recognized as a founding member of the Canadian Actors' Equity Association. His contributions to the field were acknowledged with the Larry McCance Award for Excellence from Canadian Actors' Equity in 1988 and the Montreal ACTRA Award for Excellence in 2007.

While his live-action work included roles in films such as Mrs. Soffel and The Greatest Game Ever Played, and a recurring part in the 1990s television series Lassie, he became best known to international audiences through his voice work in animation. Massey was particularly active in dubbing Japanese anime for English-speaking markets, a field in which he portrayed a wide array of characters.

Among his most celebrated anime voice roles is that of The Doctor in the English version of the beloved series The Mysterious Cities of Gold, a role often cited as one of his most famous. His credits also include the role of Professor Crankshaw in The Bush Baby, the voice of Akela the wolf in Jungle Book: Shōnen Mowgli, and the narrator for Mori no Yōki na Kobito-tachi: Berufi to Rirubitto (The Littl' Bits). He notably voiced Geppetto in the 1972 anime series Kashi no Ki Mokku, which was later dubbed in English as Pinocchio: The Series or Saban's Adventures of Pinocchio.

In the series Meiken Jolie (known in English as Belle and Sebastian), Massey demonstrated his versatility by voicing multiple characters, including Bald Desperado, Chief Rodriguez, Detective Garcia, a Fat Police Officer, a Pharmacist, and the Police Chief. Another significant and recurring role was Captain Perez in The Mysterious Cities of Gold.

Beyond these specific credits, Massey's voice became familiar to a generation of children through his work in many other series. He was the voice of Papa Koala in Adventures of the Little Koala, Uncle Henry in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Guru Lou in Samurai Pizza Cats, and Aeolus in Ulysses 31. In the long-running and popular series Arthur, he was a regular, providing the voices of Principal Herbert Haney and Mr. Marco. He also voiced the title character in Papa Beaver's Storytime.
