Description
In the animated series Transformers: Energon, Cyclonus is a Decepticon who carries over from the events of the preceding series, Transformers: Armada. Following the apparent death of Megatron, a decade of peace leads to an unlikely alliance between Autobots and Decepticons. During this time, Cyclonus is assigned to guard a Cybertronian base located on Earth's moon, a duty he performs without a great deal of enthusiasm, as he finds himself yearning for the excitement of combat rather than a peaceful watch.
Cyclonus is characterized by a manic and reckless personality. He is not a tactician or a schemer; his primary joy comes from charging into battle with all weapons firing, often laughing maniacally or, in a peculiar quirk, yodeling as he attacks. This love for chaos and destruction makes him unpredictable, and even his fellow Decepticons regard him as somewhat unbalanced. While not particularly intelligent, he possesses a near-total lack of fear, a trait his commanders find useful. Despite his wild nature, he remains fundamentally loyal to the Decepticon cause and its leadership, though his loyalty is driven more by a desire for conflict than by any political or ideological conviction.
His primary motivation throughout Energon is a simple one: the return to a state of war. He is a soldier who thrives on battle, and the peacetime posting on the moon is a source of boredom and frustration. When the opportunity to resurrect Megatron arises, Cyclonus eagerly seizes it, hoping to restore the violent order he prefers. He is quick to abandon the Autobots when presented with proof that Megatron might still be alive, specifically the Megatron Sword wielded by Scorponok. His motivation is not a grand ambition for power but the promise of endless fighting.
Within the story, Cyclonus serves as one of the primary Decepticon soldiers following Megatron's revival. He initially appears as a guardian of the moon base but quickly defects to help rebuild the Decepticon forces. He actively participates in the new war, engaging Autobots and helping to secure resources like Energon. His most significant story moment occurs after he is severely damaged in battle. He returns to Megatron begging for repairs, but his failure angers the Decepticon leader. As punishment, Megatron uses the power of Unicron to painfully reformat Cyclonus into a new form. This new body, which transforms into a snow cat-like assault vehicle, comes with a new identity: Snow Cat. In this new form, his erratic combat style is complemented by a new habit of yodeling, especially when using retractable skis to "ski" through space or on the battlefield.
His most notable relationship is with his fellow Decepticon, Demolishor. The two share a close friendship and often fight alongside one another, enjoying the destruction they cause together. Cyclonus also has a long-standing partnership with a Mini-Con named Crumplezone, who shares his love for explosive and reckless charges. In the series, Cyclonus is shown to assist in convincing Demolishor to rejoin the Decepticons, and later expresses a sense of loneliness when his friend is reformatted and loses his memories, a fate that Cyclonus himself does not suffer.
Cyclonus undergoes a significant physical development when he is reformatted into Snow Cat. This is not an upgrade he seeks but a punishment that results in a new, more powerful body. His tactical approach does not change, but his personality quirks become more pronounced, replacing his maniacal laughter with yodeling. Toward the end of Energon, when Galvatron (the revived and upgraded Megatron) flies into an Energon sun in a suicidal attack, Cyclonus, in his Snow Cat form, chooses not to follow. He remains adrift in space with Demolishor, posing a quiet question about what purpose remains for a Decepticon soldier without a war to fight.
In terms of abilities, Cyclonus initially transforms into a blue and grey Cybertronian combat helicopter. In this mode, he is highly maneuverable and armed with heavy artillery, including missiles. He can also combine with his Mini-Con partner, Crumplezone, to increase his firepower. After his transformation into Snow Cat, his alternate mode changes to a half-track snow vehicle. In this form, he deploys skis from his legs, allowing him to traverse any surface at high speed, including the vacuum of space, as if he were downhill skiing. He is also equipped with powerful cannons in this new body, and his signature maniacal charge remains his primary battle tactic.
