Description
Doubleface, alias Sideways, advances Unicron's objectives by manipulating the Autobot-Decepticon conflict. He employs deception not for personal benefit, but to provoke reactions and fuel the hatred sustaining his master, viewing the faction war as beneath him and merely a means to an end.
His origin lacks detail, first appearing on Earth as a beam of light striking near the Autobot base, posing as a drifter drawn into the conflict. He initially allies with the Autobots, aiding Hot Shot against Scavenger. His focus on Mini-Cons sparks Autobot and human suspicion. He later betrays Hot Shot during a Moon mission, revealing Decepticon allegiance by switching insignia and facilitating the Star Saber's theft for Megatron. This pattern of shifting loyalties continues; he demonstrates no true commitment to either faction, often stating he avoids "taking sides" when challenged by Decepticons like Demolishor.
He specializes in psychological manipulation, sowing discord within both factions. He subtly turns Starscream against Megatron while convincing Megatron of Starscream's treachery, provoking a violent confrontation. When this fails to end in execution, he notes Megatron's mercy as a critical weakness. Later, he attempts to hack the Autobot base, trapping human allies in a digital universe to coerce surrender of their Mini-Cons; this plan fails when they exploit his limitations within that realm.
In combat, he wields arm-mounted cannons or blades depending on form and utilizes a "trans-phase mode" for intangibility, enabling repair of severe damage – such as when Megatron slices him apart over his scheming. After this apparent destruction, his rider component reforms into a nanite creature, confirming survival. He continues collaborating with Decepticon tactician Thrust, though their efforts are often thwarted by Autobot reinforcements or power-ups like Optimus Prime and Jetfire's combination.
His ultimate role involves awakening Unicron. With Thrust, he steals the Star Saber, Skyboom Shield, and Requiem Blaster, delivering the latter two to Unicron. Inside Unicron, he reveals himself as an emissary created to return the Mini-Cons – Unicron's cells – to their master's control. Human intervention reawakens the Mini-Cons' free will, severing Unicron's connection to their power. The freed Mini-Con weapons subsequently destroy Doubleface.
