Description
Nyarome sprang from creator Fujio Akatsuka's childhood memory of abandoning a stray cat tied to a rock, later learning it survived. This fueled a character embodying stubborn resilience and fearlessness. Early manga portrayed him as a four-legged kitten, evolving into a bipedal, anthropomorphic cat after a meeting suggested a "Puss in Boots" influence, becoming his definitive form.

He is a slender, bipedal cat with long triangular ears and a large, often open triangular mouth. His color varies: manga depicts him orange, bright red, yellow, or pink, while anime typically uses orange or red. Early quadrupedal depictions labeled him a "kitten," contrasting with his established age of 28.

Nyarome fiercely self-identifies as a "Nyangen" (a blend of "nyan" and "ningen," meaning human), demanding equal treatment and rejecting animal classification. His personality mixes loudness, mischievousness, stubbornness, and occasional kindness. Though smarter than ordinary cats, his intellect is limited; he grasps basic math but possesses kindergarten-level literacy, knowing only the hiragana "shi," "no," and "ku." He persistently pursues human women, frequently proposing marriage.

His speech evolved significantly. Early manga limited him to shouting his name, but he later habitually ended sentences with "nyarome." He displays a distinct dialect, pronouncing words like "Guardman" as "Gyardman," "shiawase" (happiness) as "shyawase," and "kawaii" (cute) as "kyawaii."

He maintains close bonds with Kemunpas (a caterpillar) and Beshi (a philosophically inclined frog), often seen with them, though he has betrayed them. He interacts with other characters in Akatsuka's interconnected "Star System," including the Matsuno sextuplets and Chibita.

Beyond his original series, *Extraordinary Ataro*, Nyarome appears widely across Akatsuka's works like *The Genius Bakabon*, *Osomatsu-kun*, *The Flower of Dekoppachi*, *Harenchi Masterpiece Series*, *Gag Guerrilla*, *Nyarome's Laboratory*, and *The Great Stupid Detective Kogoro Hakuchi*. He stars in educational spinoffs such as the *Nyarome's Fun Classroom* book series and its *Studies* derivatives, instructing other Akatsuka characters.

In animation, Nyarome debuted in the 1969 *Furious Ataro* series. Within the 1988 *Osomatsu-kun* anime, he serves as comic relief or exposition, often yelling location commentary. Specific episodes show him assaulted by Osomatsu and Choromatsu for disruptive yelling (episode 40) and attempting to court female cats like Nyaroko, his romantic efforts often thwarted, such as by Chibita's pranks (episode 61). He returned in the 1990 *Furious Ataro* series, modernized as an aspiring rock star bothering the main characters while living in an abandoned tour bus with Kemunpas and Beshi.
