Description
Kate Mirror, also known as Kate Shadow, was born human to Catherine Mirror, heiress to the Mirrors House and original owner of Shadows House. Her mother’s exposure to a Morph during pregnancy caused Kate’s development to span fifty years and resulted in Catherine’s death during childbirth. Raised by her mother’s maid, Emily, who posed as her grandmother and concealed her origins, Kate gradually blackened until she fully transformed into a Shadow, leading to her isolation. On her thirteenth birthday, a confrontation with Emily revealed the truth, prompting Kate to flee to Shadows House in search of answers.
Disguised in a black cloth, Kate intentionally allowed herself to be captured as a Morph to infiltrate Shadows House. Placed in the Mimicry Room, she observed Shadows and their Living Dolls, learning the house’s operations. She eventually mimicked a human girl she had encountered who closely resembled her and was paired with Emilico—a name she chose to encourage individuality, defying typical Shadows House conventions.
Initially distant and reserved toward Emilico, Kate maintained this demeanor both from fear of discovery and due to the brainwashing coffee given to Living Dolls. She often exhibited frustration or anger, resulting in significant soot emissions that Emilico cleaned. Despite this, Kate showed care by sharing high-quality food, teaching Emilico to read, and allowing her to experience wearing makeup and fine clothing.
Kate discovered an ability to manipulate soot when she realized she could control soot-filled dolls made by Emilico. She practiced this power in secret, as it was absent from Shadows House literature. This skill enables her to create soot constructs and influence soot-related phenomena, proving vital in her opposition to the house’s leadership.
Her relationships shape her development. She views Emilico as a friend rather than a servant, deeply valuing her autonomy and well-being. John, another Shadow, grew attached to Kate after observing her empathetic and independent behavior, leading him to mimic these traits. Kate maintains an adversarial relationship with Edward, who seeks to undermine her, and has formed alliances with Shadows like Louise, Patrick, and Shirley, though levels of trust vary.
Driven by her background, Kate rebels against Lord Grandfather and the oppressive structures of Shadows House. She organized a revolution, using her knowledge and alliances to challenge the system. Key efforts included reversing the brainwashing from the special coffee, such as forcing Emilico to repeatedly drink water to purge the controlling substance—a painful process that helped restore Emilico’s individuality. She also collaborated with John to save their Living Dolls, using methods like physical confrontation to break the brainwashing.
Throughout her journey, Kate evolves from an isolated, cautious figure into a strategic leader who coordinates with other Shadows and Living Dolls to expose secrets and foster resistance. She often takes significant risks, such as leaving her room unauthorized to aid Emilico or confronting powerful adversaries like Edward and Thomas. She continues seeking answers about her family’s history and the true nature of Shadows House, aiming to dismantle its corrupt hierarchy and free those it oppresses.
