Description
Ricky, originally named Patrick, and Patrick both hail from Mirrorside Village. There, Ricky was a serious, competitive student who frequently clashed with John yet maintained a close bond with Louise. Before the Shadows House selection, Louise convinced Ricky to attend a circus where they discovered an orphan girl later known as Emilico. Alongside John and Louise, they aided her entry into the selection using the false name "Kate." Both subsequently underwent brainwashing via coffee and entered the Shadows House, where a morph approached Patrick.
Serving as Patrick's Living Doll and "face," Ricky is a young boy with neatly kept blonde hair styled back, pale skin, and blue eyes. He initially projects arrogance and self-assurance, often provoking arguments with figures like Shaun to assert dominance. This behavior masks deep insecurities and a strategic tendency to overthink situations. Beneath this facade lies a kind, sensitive nature, particularly evident in his growing affection for Lou and unwavering loyalty to Patrick. Over time, he becomes more openly compassionate, relying less on manipulation and more on honesty in relationships.
Patrick, as a Shadow, manifests as a soot-black silhouette matching Ricky's form, dressed in green plaid Victorian-style clothing. He projects confidence and arrogance but harbors significant insecurities, chiefly regarding his below-average soot power. Patrick heavily depends on Ricky for emotional support and decision-making, constantly seeking his advice to maintain status. This reliance is mutual; during the Debut, Patrick panicked when trapped in a box. Emilico's kindness, offering him an orange slice and a daffodil, ignited a secret romantic attachment to her. This love conflicts with Shadows House norms, as Shadows are not meant to perceive Living Dolls as distinct individuals.
Their relationship evolves from master-servant to deep interdependence. Patrick openly values Ricky as "indispensable" and "exceptional," trusting him implicitly. Ricky demonstrates fierce loyalty, swearing on Patrick's name when accused of dishonesty and strategizing to elevate Patrick's standing. Confronting their insecurities solidifies their bond as "soulmates," actively supporting each other's emotional needs. Key developments include Ricky's growing respect for Emilico during the Debut, where he gave her shears to aid her success, and burgeoning feelings for Lou during the maze challenge, where he bandaged her injured leg and prioritized her safety, softening his initial arrogance.
Patrick's affection for Emilico becomes a significant internal conflict. He hides a flower meant for her, symbolizing his forbidden feelings, and chastises Ricky for referring to her dismissively. This love inadvertently humanizes Emilico in his eyes, challenging Shadows' ideology. Meanwhile, Ricky's brief brainwashing by soot coffee caused uncharacteristic detachment, but Patrick's emotional outburst restored his true self, deepening mutual trust.
During Emilico's kidnapping, Patrick and Ricky assisted Kate's rescue efforts. Patrick distracted the Star Bearer Barbara to gather intelligence on Edward's location, while Ricky expressed genuine concern for Emilico's safety. Post-rescue, Patrick reflected on the foundational importance of his bond with Ricky to his identity. Their journey culminates in Ricky embracing vulnerability, openly supporting Lou and Patrick, while Patrick learns self-assurance, no longer solely relying on Ricky for validation, marking their transition from insecure individuals to a resilient, interdependent pair.
