Description
Melmo Watari, a nine-year-old thrust into guardianship of her brothers Totoo and Touch after their mother’s death in a car accident, receives magical candies from her mother’s spirit. A heavenly wish grants her the ability to age rapidly: blue candies morph her into a 19-year-old, red ones revert her to childhood, and combining both triggers a brief fetal state before enabling animal transformations. With an endless supply, she maneuvers the challenges of her dual existence, balancing a child’s emotional depth with an adult’s physical agency. Her adult form unlocks societal roles—nurse, teacher, officer—to solve problems, yet her inner conflict persists as she navigates romantic yearnings and responsibilities while anchored to her true age.

The series frames her journey through episodic trials that intertwine fantasy with lessons on reproduction, gender norms, and societal pressures. When Totoo accidentally turns into a frog after ingesting the candies, Melmo races to undo the spell. Caring for infant Touch, she uses her adult form to breastfeed him, blurring lines between sibling and surrogate parent. Her eventual marriage to Jiro and motherhood to a daughter bearing her mother’s spirit culminates in a symbolic role reversal, closing her emotional arc.

Beyond her origin story, Melmo surfaces across Osamu Tezuka’s Star System—exploring love and sexuality in *Apollo’s Song*, or appearing as a maternal figure or peer in *Black Jack*. These varied roles highlight her adaptability within Tezuka’s narrative tapestry without extending her initial plot.

Empathetic and tenacious, Melmo confronts dangers to aid others, driven by a strong moral compass. Her ISTJ problem-solving and Enneagram 2w3 nurturing instincts propel her through crises, whether mundane or surreal, solidifying her as a beacon of resilience and justice in every world she inhabits.
