Description
Princesse Odette originates from the narrative of "Swan Lake," depicted differently across adaptations. In classical ballet, the sorcerer Von Rothbart transforms her into a swan, allowing her human form only at night near a lake formed by her mother's tears. Breaking the curse requires an everlasting love vow from someone who has never loved before. Prince Siegfried's pledge to Rothbart's daughter Odile, disguised as Odette, leads to betrayal; Odette typically chooses death over submission to Rothbart, often resulting in both lovers perishing to break the enchantment.

The Barbie adaptation portrays Odette as a baker's daughter discovering an enchanted forest and releasing a magic crystal, prompting Rothbart to curse her into a swan. By day she remains a swan, reverting to human form at sunset due to partial counter-magic from the Fairy Queen. She actively seeks to break the curse using the magic crystal and allies like the unicorn Lila. The spell breaks through "sharing a love so true," contrasting the ballet's vow of fidelity. She demonstrates growing courage, ultimately defeating Rothbart.

"The Swan Princess" film series presents the most extensive arc. Odette, daughter of King William and Queen Aubri, is betrothed in infancy to Prince Derek. She initially resists the arrangement due to his superficial focus on her beauty. After rejecting his marriage proposal and her father's murder, her sorcerer uncle Rothbart kidnaps and curses her to become a swan by day and human by night, freed only by Derek's public vow of everlasting love. During enchantment, she befriends animals Jean-Bob the frog, Speed the turtle, and Puffin, actively orchestrating her reunion with Derek.

After Derek breaks the curse, they marry and unite their kingdoms. Subsequent stories explore their reign: Odette orchestrates her escape from imprisonment by magician Clavius by temporarily regaining swan form to warn Derek. She is kidnapped and seemingly killed by sorceress Zelda but resurrected after magical notes are destroyed. A spectral Rothbart disrupts her first holiday with Derek; she breaks his spells through song and aids his defeat. She and Derek adopt a girl, Alise, after rescuing her from a fire; Odette comforts Alise by relating her own parental loss, promising unwavering support, and later confronts antagonists targeting Alise based on a false prophecy.

Later installments show her mentoring Alise, hosting events like a music competition, attending weddings, and thwarting threats like pirates and manipulative nobles. Her character evolves from a reluctant princess to a resilient queen and adoptive mother, consistently emphasizing courage, loyalty, and leadership against adversaries including Rothbart, Zelda, and Clavius.
