Description
Dik Dik Van Dik, originally named Gazelleman in Japanese media, is a Justice Chojin superhero wrestler who graduated first in his class from the Hercules Factory, recognized as the top wrestler of his promotion group. Despite this prestigious start, he frequently loses matches, often to establish the threat level of villains, cementing his reputation as a comedic underdog. Half-gazelle and half-human, his physical features reflect his heritage, and he maintains a strict vegetarian diet.
Assigned to protect Tokyo alongside Mantaro Kinniku, son of the legendary Suguru Kinniku, he initially serves as Mantaro's mentor and monitor. Their relationship evolves into camaraderie and rivalry. Gazelleman participates in training sessions and supports teammates during critical battles, though he rarely takes the spotlight in major conflicts. Early encounters with the villainous d.M.p typically result in swift defeats, like being overpowered by Kevin Mask or thrown into an alley by hooded assailants, showcasing his initial vulnerability.
His known techniques include the Antler Fist, delivering a powerful leaping punch using an antler-adorned glove. His more advanced Savannah Heat technique demonstrates significantly greater effectiveness, capable of splitting opponents into three sections. Despite his technical skills, his win record remains poor, a point frequently noted by others. A notable exception is a tag-team match against the Poison Six Pack's French Connection, where he secures a rare victory alongside teammate Wally Tusket, portrayed as an emotional milestone.
Throughout story arcs, he undergoes subtle development. In the HF Second Year Replacement Matches, he faces Jade but loses due to diminished stamina from lack of training, suffering severe injuries requiring hospitalization. During the Chojin Olympics: The Resurrection, he returns to Tanzania, becomes its national champion by defeating Sky Crow, but is eliminated in the preliminary rounds after losing a "Rock, Paper, Scissors" match, blaming his excessive curiosity. His role shifts primarily to comic relief, such as disguising himself as an elderly spectator or unsuccessfully justifying losses through "reverse psychology."
In the Demon Seed Arc, he actively supports Mantaro's training after a significant defeat, assisting in rowing teammates, providing motivational taunts, and participating in combined training exercises simulating opponents' techniques. He remains a consistent background supporter during major tournaments, rarely engaging directly in combat. Personality-wise, he perceives himself as a charismatic "pretty boy" popular with fans, though crowds often overlook or trample him while cheering for others. He maintains fierce loyalty to his friends in the Muscle League/Team AHO, frequently appearing alongside them as a commentator, merchandise salesman, or spectator. His blend of bravado, frequent failures, and occasional earnest efforts solidifies his role as a persistent figure within the Justice Chojin ranks.
