Description
Grocky, sometimes called Ruffino in regional versions or spelled Glocky, was the chief mechanical engineer and strategist for the antagonist Marjo's group. His name originates from the Japanicized word "gurokki" (groggy), with some sources suggesting "grotesque" as an alternative root.
Initially posing as a trusted assistant to Dr. Kieta, Grocky helped develop the original Time Bokan time machine with Tanpei, Junko, and Chorobo. This role concealed his true purpose: spying for Marjo to steal the machine for her profit schemes. His betrayal came after Dr. Kieta vanished during a test run; Grocky seized a rare Dynamond jewel from the returning parrot Parrosuke, who arrived in the time machine instead of the doctor. He delivered the jewel to Marjo and her other henchman, Walsa, then openly revealed his allegiance by threatening the protagonists at gunpoint to take the Time Bokan.
After the protagonists escaped, Grocky applied his technical skills to build Marjo's gang a new time machine, the Gaikottsu. As the group's self-proclaimed intellectual, he specialized in designing animal-themed mechas launched from this machine, typically featuring rear hatches for entry and exit. His engineering even implied transforming live animals, like a small frog, into functional giant mechas in one episode. However, Grocky's mechanical work consistently suffered from critical oversights and clumsiness. His mecha preparations often caused accidents, such as overheating interiors or damaging Marjo's mansion, and his planned "highlight" attacks invariably backfired due to his failure to test them.
Grocky displayed a subservient yet eccentric personality, frequently muttering when frustrated and indiscriminately flirting with individuals regardless of gender. He showed no ethical restraint in harming others or disrupting lives to acquire Dynamonds for Marjo. His loyalty to Marjo stemmed from unrequited romantic feelings, compelling him to obey her commands despite frequent disagreements. This devotion continued even after Marjo descended into madness by the series' end, with Grocky reluctantly following her.
In later media, Grocky appeared in *Time Bokan: Royal Revival*, racing with the Time Skeletons against other villain trios. Their team was eliminated when their own missile attack backfired, echoing Grocky's recurring engineering failures.
