Operating an alcohol vending business in Takunaha, Vieux Alambic (known as "Booze Man" in English materials) discovers the severely injured Gugu after a log-rolling accident. He performs life-saving surgery, leaving Gugu with a disfigured face and undisclosed physiological modifications. Three months later, Vieux Alambic provides Gugu shelter and employment. His pragmatically ambiguous approach includes implanting an extra organ in Gugu specifically to experiment with internal alcohol brewing, causing Gugu significant distress upon discovery. When Fushi and Pioran arrive, Vieux Alambic offers them temporary residence. He initially suggests selling Fushi, prompting Gugu's strong opposition and insistence on treating Fushi as family. Vieux Alambic often employs dry humor and blunt observations, advising Gugu against sulking over Rean's attention to Fushi. His experimental surgery becomes central to the conflict. After Gugu flees upon learning the truth, Vieux Alambic expresses regret. He sends Rean to find Gugu with an apology and an offer to remove the organ. Vieux Alambic's tower serves as a refuge during crises, harboring Gugu and Rean from pursuers and becoming a focal point for their return. His expertise lies in distillation and unconventional medical practices.
