Description
Chūta is a young mouse whose background and role are central to the driving conflict of The Adventures of Gamba. He originates from a mouse community on an island called Yumemishima, though this location is also referred to as Devil's Island in some adaptations. His life is marked by tragedy and fear, as his homeland is ruthlessly oppressed by the Noroi Clan, a group of predatory weasels led by a terrifying leader named Noroi. This clan's invasion brings devastation to the island's mice, resulting in the destruction of families and forcing Chūta to flee after suffering injuries. His family includes his older sister, Shioji, and his grandfather, Elder Shuro, who is the leader of the island's mouse colony.

In terms of personality, Chūta is initially presented as a vulnerable and troubled character, shaped by the traumatic experiences he has endured as a victim of the weasels' reign of terror. His demeanor reflects the hopelessness of his situation, yet beneath this exterior lies a deep well of courage born from his personal struggles. His primary motivation is unwaveringly protective; he is driven by a fierce determination to save his surviving family members, including his sister and grandfather, and to liberate his home from the tyranny of the weasels.

Chūta serves as the essential catalyst for the entire story. He is the character who brings the call to adventure, undertaking a dangerous journey from his ravaged island to a harbor town in search of aid. It is there, wounded and desperate, that he encounters the protagonist, Gamba, and his companion Bobo. Chūta passionately implores them for help, recounting the atrocities committed by Noroi and his clan. While the more experienced sailor mice are hesitant to face the fearsome Noroi, Chūta’s dire circumstances and his desperate plea are what ultimately compel Gamba to promise to save the island and its mice, thus launching the adventure.

His key relationships are fundamental to his character. His bond with Gamba is crucial, as Chūta finds in him the brave and just ally he has been seeking. However, his most significant ties are to his family on Yumemishima, particularly his elder sister Shioji and his grandfather, the colony's elder, for whose safety he risks everything. Chūta undergoes notable development throughout the narrative. While he begins as a victim in need of rescue, his experiences and participation in the quest shape him into someone remarkably brave. He is not merely a passive character to be saved; he actively contributes to the resistance. His deep familiarity with the terrain of Yumemishima and his understanding of the weasels' methods become invaluable assets, allowing him to help Gamba and the other mice devise strategies and rally the remaining island mice in the fight against their oppressors. Chūta’s journey transforms him from a symbol of the island's suffering into a courageous fighter for its freedom.
