Description
Cateau is a messenger dispatched from the Flower Star, a realm populated by plant spirits and fairy-like beings. The King of the Flower Star sends him to Earth alongside a partner, a talking dog named Nouveau. Their critical mission is to locate a descendant of the Flower Star people who is capable of finding the legendary Seven Color Flower, a magical blossom that serves as the symbol of the royal family's authority and is essential for the rightful heir to ascend the throne. To move discreetly on Earth, Cateau takes the form of a talking cat, though his true form is a winged humanoid Flower Spirit.
Cateau and Nouveau identify the young girl Lunlun Flower in France as the descendant they seek, due to Lunlun's maternal lineage connected to the Flower Star people. On her fifteenth birthday, they recruit Lunlun for the quest, and Cateau becomes one of her primary companions and protectors throughout the journey that follows. Along with Nouveau, he accompanies Lunlun across Europe and into Northern Africa in search of the Seven Color Flower. Their mission is consistently challenged by a pair of antagonists, the selfish fairy Togenishia and her servant Yabouki, who seek to steal the flower for their own ambitions to rule the Flower Star. Cateau is also present in the theatrical short film Konnichiwa Sakura no Sono, where he supports Lunlun during a visit to Japan and helps confront the same adversaries amid a crisis involving prematurely falling cherry blossoms.
Cateau acts as a loyal advisor and guardian to Lunlun. He assists her by sensing approaching dangers, navigating obstacles, and offering guidance as they travel from place to place helping the people they encounter. His personality is defined by dedication to the mission and a protective instinct toward Lunlun, consistently prioritizing her safety and the success of their quest. He possesses knowledge about the magical tools Lunlun receives, including the Flower Key, a transformative pin given by the king, which allows Lunlun to change into situation-appropriate outfits when a flower is reflected in its mirror. Cateau also exhibits feline mannerisms or sounds at times while in his animal disguise, a remnant of his chosen Earth form, though he fundamentally remains a magical being with a serious purpose. He shares a close, sibling-like dynamic with Nouveau, working in tandem with him to support Lunlun.
Cateau's role in the story is that of a steadfast magical companion. He undergoes no significant personal evolution or standalone background development across the series or film, remaining focused solely on the central quest. His key relationships are with Lunlun, defined by loyalty and mentorship, and with Nouveau, as a partner in the mission. He opposes the villains Togenishia and Yabouki, consistently helping to thwart their schemes. Cateau's notable abilities include speaking, sensing danger, navigating unfamiliar environments, providing magical assistance and explanations regarding Lunlun's powers, and, in his true form, the natural capabilities of a Flower Spirit from his home world.
