Description
Kaoru Orihara, known as "Kaoru-no-Kimi" (Prince Kaoru), earned her nickname through androgynous beauty and a noble demeanor reminiscent of Kaoru Genji from "The Tale of Genji." A 17-year-old first-year student at Seiran Academy, she is older than classmates due to a year-long absence caused by health issues.
She holds the position of class representative and captains the school basketball team, renowned for her athletic prowess and tomboyish style. Behind this energetic and leadership-oriented exterior, Kaoru conceals a serious illness—breast cancer—known only to a few close associates. This illness necessitated a mastectomy, which she kept private from most peers.
Kaoru possesses a strong sense of justice and opposes institutional elitism. She despises the Sorority, an elite club at Seiran, primarily because of its president Fukiko Ichinomiya's manipulation and abuse of Rei Asaka, Kaoru's closest friend. Loyalty to Rei drives her protective actions, including intervening in Rei's self-destructive behaviors and openly challenging Fukiko's authority.
Her past includes a romantic relationship with Takehiko Henmi, Nanako Misonoo's pen pal and mentor. Kaoru ended the relationship after her mastectomy, feeling unworthy due to her changed body, yet she remains emotionally connected to him.
Throughout the series, Kaoru supports Nanako during intense bullying incidents, offering guidance and physical protection. She also aids Mariko Shinobu, helping her navigate family trauma and self-acceptance. Kaoru's illness occasionally forces her to confront physical limitations, but she persists in living fully.
Her character arc concludes differently across media. In the manga, she marries Takehiko and moves to Germany but dies two years later. The anime adaptation revises this: she recovers from cancer, marries Takehiko, gives birth to a son, and maintains a life in Germany.
Kaoru's legacy lies in her defiance of societal norms, advocacy for others, and embodiment of courage amid personal struggle, leaving a lasting impact on peers like Nanako and Mariko.
