Description
Baron Ashura began as Tristan and Isolde, two Mycenaean priests serving Archduke Gorgon. They joined a plot to assassinate Zeus after he severed ties with Uranus, an act hastening the empire's fall. A time travel ritual intended to sacrifice their future selves went awry. Koji Kabuto and Mazinger Z intervened, thwarting the assassination and leaving Tristan and Isolde in stasis on Bardos Island.

Millennia later, Dr. Hell, Tsubasa Nishikiori, and Kenzo Kabuto discovered the preserved bodies. Observing decay on specific halves, they applied a mysterious formula that dissolved the damaged parts and fused the viable halves into a single entity—Baron Ashura. Unbeknownst to the others, Dr. Hell had deliberately caused the decay after learning of the priests' ritual to revive the Mycenae Empire. Ashura awoke violently, attacking the resurrection party before neurosurgical intervention implanted commands preventing attacks against Dr. Hell, Tsubasa, or their associates, ensuring loyalty. Ashura became Dr. Hell's foremost servant, commanding the Ashura Corps and overseeing Mechanical Beast operations.

Physically, Ashura presents a striking amalgamation: the left side shows masculine traits with darker skin, a black eye, and a thick eyebrow, while the right side displays feminine characteristics with lighter skin, makeup, and lipstick. Removing the hood reveals short black hair. This form combines Tristan’s original lighter skin, black hair, and red chest armor with Isolde’s long red hair and violet dress.

Loyalty to Dr. Hell and the Mycenae Empire defined Ashura’s core, inherited from the priests. Ruthless tactics against enemies included hostage-taking and torture, coupled with acute sensitivity about the fused form. Relationships were complex: interactions with Dr. Hell showed unwavering submissiveness, often using the feminine voice. A fierce rivalry existed with Count Brocken, another lieutenant competing for favor, underpinned by mutual respect. Intense animosity targeted the Kabuto family—Tsubasa for her resurrection role, Juzo for opposing Dr. Hell, and Koji Kabuto, initially viewed solely as the enemy piloting a reminder of Zeus. This dynamic shifted temporarily when Ashura discovered Dr. Hell’s deceptions and formed an uneasy alliance with Koji.

As commander, Ashura held authority over the Ashura Corps and Mechanical Beasts. Proficiency in disguise enabled infiltration, such as posing as Inspector Ankokuji. Superhuman physical capabilities included running on water and briefly overpowering Mazinger Z barehanded. The primary weapon was the Bardos Wand, controlling Mechanical Beasts and projecting non-lethal energy. A critical vulnerability stemmed from the neurosurgical commands preventing direct attacks against Dr. Hell or associates. This restriction lifted after Dr. Hell’s demise, allowing Ashura to perform a ritualistic self-sacrifice by tearing the fused body apart to awaken the Mycenae Empire.

Operational history involved directing assaults against Dr. Hell’s enemies. Early missions included orchestrating Juzo Kabuto’s assassination and deploying Mechanical Beasts like Garada K7 and Doublas M2 against Mazinger Z. Repeated failures led to Dr. Hell’s waning trust and Ashura’s eventual replacement by Count Brocken. Subsequent events included temporary alliances with Brocken, command of the submarine fortress Bood, and a final, fatal assault where Ashura crashed the Bood into Mazinger Z. This act caused mortal injuries. Ashura died in Archduke Gorgon’s arms, expressing pride in fighting bravely for Dr. Hell.

In the Shin Mazinger Z continuity, Ashura’s discovery of Dr. Hell’s role in causing the decay and massacring Mycenaeans triggered profound betrayal. This led to a strategic but short-lived alliance with Koji Kabuto to oppose Dr. Hell. Ashura ultimately betrayed Koji, reverting loyalty to the Mycenae Empire and sacrificing the fused body to awaken it fully, fulfilling Tristan and Isolde’s original purpose.
