TV-Series
Description
Dr. Gennosuke Yumi directs the Photon Power Laboratory, succeeding his deceased mentor Dr. Juzo Kabuto. A Nobel Prize-winning scientist specializing in robotics and photon-based energy systems, his appearance is that of a middle-aged man with dark hair, a mustache, and glasses, typically dressed in a white lab coat over formal attire like a shirt, tie, or suit.

He designed the Aphrodite A robot for peaceful purposes using Dr. Kabuto's research on Super-Alloy Z and photonic energy, initially resisting its weaponization before it incorporated the Oppai Missile System. He later created its successor, Diana A, following Aphrodite A's destruction. In an alternate manga continuity, he studied ancient Greek-like ruins and reconstructed the unearthed Olympian warrior Zeus into the Z Mazinger robot to combat Dr. Hell. His strategic skills involve analyzing enemy weaknesses, coordinating the Photon Power Laboratory's defenses, and memorizing vital blueprints like the Jet Scrander as contingencies. He has contemplated self-sacrifice to protect the lab's secrets.

He is the sole parent of Sayaka Yumi, with no mention of her mother. While she respects his battle advice and follows directives, their relationship is strained by his prioritization of work over her emotional needs during her depression or requests for robot upgrades. He acts as guardian to Juzo Kabuto's grandchildren, Koji and Shiro Kabuto, though Koji often disregards his guidance due to impulsiveness. His professional demeanor extends to collaborations with laboratory staff, with minimal interactions with supporting characters like Boss limited to operational acknowledgments.

Throughout the original series, he advises pilots during assaults by Dr. Hell's Mechanical Beasts, including Baron Ashura and Count Brocken. He witnesses Aphrodite A's destruction and facilitates Diana A's deployment. In later storylines like Great Mazinger and Grendizer, his role diminishes but includes providing crucial tactical input during conflicts with the Mycenae Empire and Vegan Empire. The OVA Mazinkaiser expands his involvement: he oversees Mazinkaiser's activation, coordinates defenses against enhanced threats like the Ghost Mechanical Beasts, survives an assassination attempt by Baron Ashura during a government meeting, evacuates the laboratory during the final battle against Dr. Hell, and observes Koji's victory in Mazinkaiser from a bunker.

In Gosaku Ota's alternate manga continuity, he operates on an artificial island studying ancient ruins. After Koji unearths Zeus's remains, he converts them into the Z Mazinger. This version lacks glasses and demonstrates direct combat involvement, analyzing robot capabilities during battles and confronting mechanical beasts.

The etymology of his name reflects his character: "Yumi" means "archery bow," while "Gennosuke" combines "string/bowstring," "this," and "help/rescue."
