Description
Dr. Yama, fully referred to as Doctor Yamanoue, is a roboticist and Director of the Ministry of Science. He designs the physical body of a powerful robot boy intended for military use, while his colleague Dr. Kawashimo develops its advanced artificial intelligence, instilling it with a human-like capacity to learn and a childlike personality. Their fundamental disagreement over the robot’s purpose—whether it should serve as a weapon or be raised as a child—forms a central conflict between them.
Dr. Yama views his creation with paternal pride and bears a name reflecting the Roman god of war, underscoring the robot’s intended martial function. His rigorous training emphasizes combat and destruction, though the robot often exhibits a playful and mischievous nature at odds with this militaristic upbringing.
A catastrophic accident occurs during the testing of a new gravity weapon developed by Dr. Yama and his team, killing all present. Dr. Yama, however, survives. His survival leads to capture by a foreign nation, where he is forced to work under a dictator. During this imprisonment, he manages to send word confirming he is alive.
His influence extends beyond his own series into other media within his creator’s broader universe. He makes a single-panel cameo in a 1977 chapter of the *Black Jack* manga. In the video game *Astro Boy: Omega Factor*, a character inspired by his design and serving a similar role as a creator for battle appears under the name "Mars."
