Description
Tenpei Matsuki, former goalkeeper for the Japanese national football team and Olympic bronze medalist in Mexico, saw his playing career abruptly end due to an injury from a yakuza altercation. Forced into retirement, he takes charge as soccer coach at Shinsei High School, aiming to forge a team capable of national contention. His coaching employs intense, demanding regimens that push players to their physical and mental limits, methods some perceive as harsh, even sadistic. This approach sparks significant resistance, especially from protagonist Shingo Tamai, who rebels by forming a rival squad.

Mentored by influential German coach Dettmar Cramer, Matsuki possesses deep tactical understanding and technical expertise. His exceptional goalkeeping skills once earned him the nickname "Goal Tiger." At Shinsei High, overrun by delinquents and lacking authority, his no-nonsense demeanor and strict discipline fill a void. Initial clashes give way to earned respect through his unwavering commitment to excellence. His antagonistic relationship with Shingo evolves into mutual understanding, leading to Shingo becoming team captain under his guidance.

Matsuki embodies determination, resilience, and pragmatism over emotional considerations. His leadership stresses accountability, teamwork, and overcoming personal limits, often through unorthodox exercises like blindfolded drills to build skill under pressure. His influence transforms Shinsei High into a nationally competitive team, cementing his legacy as a coach who demands victory while instilling discipline and purpose. The series concludes with the team's significant success, reflecting Matsuki's impact on their athletic and personal development.
