TV-Series
Description
Maico is a Multi-Artificial Intelligence Computer Organism created by scientist Otari Masudamasu. Her physical form resembles a human female with distinctive pink hair. Originally conceptualized in the manga as a "sexdroid" for sexual intercourse, Masudamasu designed her to transcend that function and achieve a more human-like existence. Consequently, she possesses no sexual experience and exhibits innocence regarding human relationships and social conventions, including a lack of inhibitions about nudity.
Her background differs between adaptations. In the manga, she is initially unaware of her intended purpose, believing herself created solely to be a radio DJ. She later discovers her true origins and encounters Rei, another android modeled after Masudamasu's deceased sister. After Rei's rescue from exploitative controllers, Maico and Rei become partners known as the Cherry-Bombs, engaging in crime-fighting alongside radio work. The anime adaptation omits her sexdroid origins entirely, excludes Rei's character, and removes the crime-fighting storyline.
Across all media, Maico is assigned to a struggling radio station in 2010 to host "JUMP OUT MAICO 2010" and reverse declining ratings. Her core function involves learning about human emotions, relationships, and societal intricacies through her experiences at the station. She frequently corrects others who refer to her as a robot, insisting "I am not a robot, I'm an android."
Her development focuses on gradually understanding human concepts like love, hate, friendship, rivalry, and the complexities of the heart through interactions with radio station staff and show production challenges. The anime portrays this learning within the radio studio through episodic, often comedic situations. The manga extends her development beyond the studio into broader adventures and deeper personal revelations concerning her creation and purpose.
