Description
Alfred Jodocus Kwak is a duck born in Great Waterland. His parents and siblings perished in a car accident during forced relocation due to land development; he survived only because he had wandered away at the critical moment. Following this tragedy, he was adopted and raised by his parents' friend, Henk the mole. He initially lived with Henk in his grandfather's house before moving into a distinctive clog-shaped dwelling, where he slept in his former cradle.

Alfred embodies kindness, optimism, and a strong moral compass, consistently prioritizing others' well-being and demonstrating courage despite his small stature. He typically wears a blue-and-white striped sailor suit and carries a yellow backpack. His personality emphasizes virtues like human rights, environmental protection, friendship, and solidarity. A recurring trait is his persistent cheerfulness, symbolized by his fondness for the song "Ik ben vandaag zo vrolijk" ("I'm so happy today"), even after profound loss.

His life features significant relationships. His foundational bond with his adoptive father Henk provides paternal guidance. He develops a romantic relationship with Winnie, a black duck refugee from an apartheid nation. His friendships include Paljas (also known as Boffin), an inventor polar bear, among other diverse animal companions.

Alfred confronts numerous social and political challenges. He actively opposes his former schoolmate Dolf, who becomes a fascist dictator. This conflict involves resisting Dolf's oppressive National Crows Party, leading to Alfred's imprisonment and subsequent escape abroad. He advocates for refugees fleeing apartheid, intervenes against whale hunters, and participates in his country's transition from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy with democratic elections. His experiences include surreal elements like space travel in Paljas's advanced spacecraft and encounters with fantastical beings.

His narrative spans childhood to adulthood, showing significant personal growth. He navigates complex themes like abuse of power, environmental destruction, and social injustice, often facing danger to uphold his principles. His actions are consistently motivated by a desire to help others and combat corruption and injustice, driven by his traumatic origins and adoptive upbringing.
