Professor Gennosuke Yumi directs the Photon Power Laboratory, succeeding its founder Juzo Kabuto after his death. This middle-aged man sports dark hair, a mustache, and glasses, typically wearing a white lab coat over a yellow shirt and black tie at work, or a blue suit for formal events. Calm and dedicated to science, he champions photon energy exclusively for peaceful applications, rejecting weaponization even when urged by his daughter, Sayaka Yumi. Consequently, he designed robots like Aphrodite A without initial offensive capabilities. During battles against threats such as Dr. Hell’s Mechanical Beasts, he advises pilots by identifying enemy vulnerabilities. His steadfast principles sometimes manifest as stubbornness, and in dire crises, he has contemplated self-sacrifice to protect the lab, likening himself to a captain going down with his ship.
Formerly Juzo Kabuto’s apprentice, Yumi utilized Kabuto’s research on Super Alloy Z and photon energy to develop Aphrodite A and its successor, Diana A. After Kabuto’s death, he assumed stewardship of the laboratory and mentorship of Kabuto’s grandsons, Koji and Shiro Kabuto. Though professionally aligned with his daughter Sayaka during missions, their personal relationship is strained by his work prioritization and dismissal of her requests to weaponize Aphrodite A. He maintains a professional rapport with laboratory staff, relying on their expertise, while interactions with figures like Boss are largely limited to thanking them for reconnaissance.
Yumi coordinates defenses during assaults by antagonists like Baron Ashura and Dr. Hell, activating barriers, advising tactical retreats, and overseeing evacuations. In the *Mazinkaiser* OVA, he assists Koji Kabuto in piloting the Mazinkaiser against enhanced Mechanical Beasts, providing technical guidance and facilitating Kaiser Pilder deployments.
