Description
Sakon Tachibana, grandson of Bunraku master Tachibana Zaemon, continues his family's legacy as a skilled puppeteer. Trained extensively in both traditional Bunraku techniques and ventriloquism, his dual expertise allows him to mimic voices with exceptional precision, projecting them through his primary puppet, Ukon.

Sakon exhibits a striking personality shift dependent on Ukon's presence. Without the puppet, he appears timid, humble, shy, and lacking confidence, often anxious and vulnerable when separated from what he considers family. Holding Ukon transforms him into an observant, calculating, quiet, and intellectually focused individual displaying keen deductive reasoning. This transformation enables his role as an effective amateur detective solving complex mysteries during his travels.

Ukon, a distinctive Bunraku puppet crafted in 1870 during the Meiji era, is Sakon's constant companion and investigative partner. Contrary to traditional expectations, Ukon exhibits a loud, forward, obnoxious, flirtatious, coarse, and egocentric personality when animated. This serves as a bold counterbalance to Sakon's reserve, positioning Ukon as the primary vocal communicator during confrontational suspect interviews while Sakon remains the analytical mind. Sakon perceives Ukon as his best friend and integral to his identity, believing controlling a puppet involves reading the heart and portraying another's perspective.

His detective methodology heavily utilizes ventriloquism and Bunraku principles. Sakon employs Ukon to converse, extract information, and embody the perceived voices and spirits of deceased victims during investigations. This stems from his philosophy: "The masters of puppets are the masters of humans. Ventriloquism is also mind reading. Not only the voice itself is mimicked, but the voice of the soul as well." He uses these performances to confront culprits and elicit confessions, integrating deep observation of human psychology and puppetry traditions.

Sakon possesses a traumatic past, having faced childhood bullying for his passion. A pivotal tragedy at age seven saw his father commit suicide after accidentally injuring another performer, contributing to Sakon's underlying melancholy and understanding of grief, reflected in his repeated refrain: "People cannot live in grief." His backstory and family legacy are gradually revealed, deepening his connection to his art's cultural and spiritual aspects.

Physically, Sakon appears androgynous and slender, approximately 160 centimeters tall with pale skin, purple eyes, and greenish-black hair, frequently described as handsome or cute. His typical attire includes a gear necklace attached to a lace-up shirt over a black tank top, arm cuffs, and long or short sleeves. He wears a greatcoat in cold weather and dons a formal kamishimo for performances or spiritual channeling.

He receives assistance from his aunt, Kaoruko Tachibana, a young police detective who provides official case access and watches over him, though Sakon typically drives the investigations. Their relationship involves interplay where Ukon frequently teases Kaoruko.
