Description
Kaoru Matsutake, a wealthy and strikingly attractive teenager, attracts fervent admiration from female peers yet openly disdains their attention. His playful charm fosters close friendships with classmate Kaede Minami and the fairy Murumo, his mischievous partner. Fueled by unrequited romantic feelings for Kaede, he deploys his vast fortune in grandiose attempts to court her, perpetually thwarted by her unwavering infatuation with another classmate, Setsu Yuki.

Emotionally volatile and coddled, Kaoru displays childish tendencies, habitually depending on his dutiful butler Hirai for both everyday assistance and hyperbolic medical responses to trivial incidents. After a minor stumble, he once orchestrated an elaborate medical spectacle, only to dissolve into tears once alone—a vulnerability swiftly concealed when Kaede arrived. His intense attachment manifests physically, with erratic heartbeats around her prompting Hirai to prepare emergency interventions.

In the anime’s finale, a rejected marriage proposal triggers a symbolic metamorphosis, aging Kaoru into a frail old man embodying his shattered hopes. Yet Kaede and Murumo wryly predict his enduring allure, even in senescence. The manga diverges ambiguously, concluding with an unexpected kiss from Kaede that leaves their future unresolved.

Kaoru’s rapport with Murumo hinges on transactional scheming: the fairy exploits his emotional weak points for marshmallow bribes, while Kaoru enlists Murumo’s magic to advance his romantic schemes. This dynamic underscores his penchant for impulsive choices, sacrificing long-term foresight for fleeting gratification. Across all iterations, he remains defined by comedic pathos, wealth-driven escapades, and the poignant sting of one-sided devotion.
